Each year, Vermont Secondary College provides opportunities for interested students to enhance their Mathematical knowledge and understanding through competitions held at the school. The following maths enrichment activities are scheduled for Semester 1 2026.

Kangourou sans Frontières (KSF)

When: 26th March 2026

Cost: $8.50 per student

Available to year 7 students in 2026, this is a great opportunity to experience maths in a competition environment prior to the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) in August. This 75-minute online competition consists of 30 multiple choice questions from a range of mathematical topics. An expression of interest form will be posted on Compass in the coming weeks, interested year 7 students should complete the form if they wish to participate. Further information: https://amt.edu.au/ksf

The University of Melbourne School Mathematics Competition

When: 6th May 2026

Cost: TBA

This competition is of a demanding standard, designed to identify real mathematical talent. Participation is likely to be rewarding only to those students who have a real love for, and ability in, mathematics. Interested students will be asked to complete a practice paper and the best submissions will be invited to participate in the competition. Further information:

Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT)

When: 19th - 21st May 2026 (exact date TBA)

Cost: TBA

This is a one-hour problem-solving competition designed to encourage student curiosity and promote multiple modes of thinking. Students do not need computer programming ability, but the competition helps identify students’ computer programming potential. Open to all interested students in years 7-12. Further information: https://www.amt.edu.au/cat

Maths Challenge (MC)

When: 3-week period during Term 2 2026

Cost: TBA

This is a multi-week mathematical problem-solving challenge for select students in years 7-10. Participants get a problem book with six challenging math problems that require time and persistence but are based on maths that should be known at their level. They can collaborate but must submit their own solutions for each problem. Entries to this challenge will be by invitation only and limited in number. Further information:

Mathematics and Statistics Research Competition

When: TBA

Submissions Close: TBA

This competition is free to enter, open to all students, and no prior registration is required. Students may work in a team, or on their own, to research into one chosen project from a set of open-ended research problems. Students enter the competition when they submit a completed research project by the deadline. Further information: go.unimelb.edu.au/m8gi

Further information

Expression of interest forms will be distributed to parents and students via Compass. The school will handle competition enrolments and all events, except the research competition, will be held on-site. Depending on the competition conditions, students may miss one or two classes to attend the competition at school on the day of the event. Preparation for each competition may look different depending on the type of competition. Generally, we give interested students access to past papers and solutions for them to practice in the lead up to competition day. Practice is done outside of normal class time and is driven by the student. Please watch for event notices and stay tuned for announcements about the Semester 2 Competition schedule, featuring our biggest events ICAS and AMC which are open to all students in years 7-10.
