News from Year 5/6

Welcome to Term 1!
We have had a busy start to Term 1 in 5/6, with a focus on wellbeing! We have been especially focusing on expectations, respect, and responsibility, and what this means in the senior school. It would be fantastic if you could have some discussions with your child around your own family values and expectations for the final years of primary schooling. It is really important to us that we keep communication open with parents and carers and discuss any issues as they arise. Please feel free to contact us via phone, in personal after school and email: murquhart@sjyarrajunction.catholic.edu.au (Meg) and msmith@sjyarrajunction.catholic.edu.au (Meredith).

Homework
Once we have settled in, 5/6 will be receiving homework (spelling/maths/reading) to be completed during the week. This is really important in order to develop skills involving time management and independent study habits.
Inquiry in Grade 5 6
In the senior years, inquiry learning provides students with rich, real-world topics that require them to actively apply their literacy and numeracy skills while developing the Victorian Curriculum Capabilities. Through inquiry projects, students research complex questions, analyse data, interpret texts, and communicate their findings using a range of written, visual and oral formats. They use numeracy to collect, represent and evaluate information, manage timelines, and justify decisions, while literacy skills support critical reading, note-taking, discussion and persuasive communication. These learning experiences also strengthen capabilities such as Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, Ethical Understanding and Intercultural Understanding, as students collaborate, reflect on different perspectives, and take increasing responsibility for their learning.
