Holidays

It’s been a shorter yet very busy term, with much to celebrate. I write this at the conclusion of the Community Market. It was lovely to see a variety of stalls offering different types of products or treats and so many customers that were happy to spend their loose change or pocket money to help support a great local charity connected to our community, Street Peace. A huge thank you to Mr. Berry, Mr. Mason, and the VCE VM student body who work hard behind the scenes each term to pull this event together for all of Bayside to enjoy! We can’t wait for the last one for the year on Thursday 28 November.

Before that, students and teachers deserve to have a well-earned break. The term three holidays for us as a family has traditionally included a trip to somewhere along the Murray River, where the weather is often several degrees warmer and the towns and scenery different to the coastline of the Mornington Peninsula. It’s also a change from our regular beachside holiday destinations at other times of the year.

For us, we all feel closer to God when we are immersed in his creation, especially the quietness of the early morning, looking over the water, or as the sun sets behind the gum trees along the river bank. What is one of your family's favourite holiday destinations during Spring time? Is it spending time up in the city, camping in a remote area ‘off grid’, hauling the caravan interstate, or flying overseas? Either way, I hope that you see God everywhere in these surroundings and that you have the opportunity to rest and recharge as you connect with Him on a deeper level.

To our Year 6 and 12 families, please note that communication was emailed home this last week about key Term 4 dates to put in your respective calendars, whether it be for the 2025 Year 7 Transition and Orientation program or the end of Year 12 Celebration events. To our Year 10 and 11 families, please make sure that you purchase your ticket to the Formal on Wednesday 30 October and hand in your signed consent form so you can attend.

Take care, enjoy the holidays, stay safe, and God bless.

Year 9 Leadership Week

This year’s Year 9 Leadership Week was an inspiring journey of growth, teamwork, and leadership development. Throughout the week, our students faced a range of challenges that stretched them beyond their comfort zones and helped them develop essential skills for the future. From navigating public transport for the first time to raising funds for a charitable cause, each experience contributed to the student's growth as young leaders.

One of the highlights of the week was our exploration of stories from WWI from the Shrine of Remembrance, where students learned about the impact of war on families and the sacrifices made by young soldiers. We also encountered powerful artefacts from the ancient past and heard the stories of migrants seeking a better life, deepening students' understanding of resilience and courage. The CFMEU protests in the city sparked thoughtful discussions among students, broadening their perspectives on current social issues.

As followers of Jesus, we believe that true leadership is rooted in service. Mark 10:45 reminds us, "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." Prayer and Jesus' example guided our reflection throughout the week, as students were encouraged to lead with humility, kindness, and a servant’s heart.

Among the achievements of the week, the students helped to raise an impressive $713 for the Street Peace Christmas lunch, demonstrating the power of collective action and compassion. Additionally, the Year 9 cohort organised a fantastic Mini-Carnival for the rest of the school, showcasing their creativity, teamwork, and leadership in action.

We are incredibly proud of the resilience and initiative our students displayed, and we hope they will carry these experiences into their daily lives. Leadership isn't just about taking charge; it’s about listening, supporting others, and making thoughtful decisions—just as Jesus modelled during His time on earth.

A special thank you to the teachers, parents and carers who supported the week’s activities and encouraged their children throughout this journey. Your partnership is vital in nurturing the leadership potential within our students.

As we look ahead, we are excited to see how our Year 9 students will continue to grow as leaders, both within our school and in the wider community, inspired by the example of Christ.

Mr Jay Johnstone, Year 7-10 Coordinator

Street Peace Fundraiser

Year 9 students raised an impressive $717.00 for local charity @streetpeaceofficial at their 90s themed fundraiser. Students ran a variety of activities for College students to enjoy across the day and raised donations through Buzz Cuts at lunch time. Congratulations to all the students who participated and braved the clippers for a worthy cause. Street Peace is a not-for-profit, faith-based organisation providing opportunities for disengaged youth.

Staff V Students

What an epic lunchtime showdown we witnessed at lunch last Friday! The final score in the Staff vs. Students soccer match was 1-0 in favour of the staff. The only goal of the game came from Mr. Sam Green, who scored with an impressive volley from way out field. Great job staff!

Years 9/10 Food Technology

The two Year 9/10 Food Technology classes recently visited Pure Peninsula Honey in Moorooduc. Students are given a farm talk on the hives and honey production before viewing a live bee colony and tasting various honeys made from different nectars. Students enjoyed the opportunity to purchase local products and many delicious treats from real honeycomb and confectionery honeycomb to macadamia honey ice cream.

Years 9/10 OES

On Friday 16 August the Years 9/10 OES class visited Cape Woolamai on Phillip Island. The students studied the natural environment of this area focusing on the uses of coastal regions, the flora and fauna of the environment and how this can be protected for future generations. We were blessed with some beautiful weather and scenery throughout the day.

Years 9/10 Textiles

Over the past weeks, students in 9/10 Textiles have been hard at work designing their unique colour block hoodies. This fortnight marks a significant milestone as they begin production. Students collaborated together to first trace the different pattern sizes and place the pattern pieces onto the fabric carefully. As a class we discussed the importance of waste and saving as much fabric as possible. Once placed correctly students carefully cut out the fabric for their garments.

As we move into the coming week and early Term 4, students will begin sewing their hoodies together, bringing their designs to life. To add a personal touch, students will also implement a custom Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) design to complete their creations. Exciting times ahead!

Year 11 Biology

Year 11 Biology students recently visited Healesville Sanctuary, where they explored real-life examples to learn how inherited adaptations impact biodiversity. They built on their knowledge of species adaptations, ecological relationships, and human impacts. Students also conducted practical investigations, collecting and analysing data, enriching their understanding of these essential biology concepts.

Year 11 Chemistry

The Year 11 Chemistry students have been working hard at learning the lab skills and associated mathematical skills to do with titrations. Titrations are where we are accurately measuring the concentration of different acids and bases. Here we are analysing the amount of acid that is in standard vinegar you find in your pantry.

To take their skills further, the Year 11s travelled to the far lands of Strathmore, where they visited the Victorian Space Science Education Centre. There, they journeyed through the wondrous lands of utilising chemical machinery, including Ultra Violet Visible spectrophotometers and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry to analyse the different materials in chemicals. This was an excellent day of learning, both new mathematical skills and laboratory skills, through meeting and working with university students who are doing ongoing studies and research in their respective fields.

Year 12 Chemistry

The Year 12 Chemistry class have had their final practicals for the year, finishing with a glorious set up of distillation apparatus. We made a simple cup of tea and then found we wanted to take the water back out of the tea that we had just made. This apparatus is how we showed this. All in all, we are having a chemically good time.

Year 12 Home Groups

Our latest Inter Home Group Competition was a marvellous cohesion of joy and frivolity, playing a team game of tunnel ball, with an aspect of skipping involved. We played as a team, had some good laughs and got to be silly. Believe it or not, being creative, silly, and having fun are keys to having a happy life. Moreover, we believe that having fun together is a more biblical truth to live out.

With the tally still sitting at 8:9 Green (12B) to Pink (12A), the final 2 rounds of our Inter Home Group Competition are coming to a bitingly close end.

Who will be the ultimate winner in the Inter Home Group competition? Who will take the trophy for good???

Year 12 Physics

Our Year 12 physics class have been working on their Extended Practical Investigation.

There have been a couple of noteworthy efforts.

The first is an investigation into how the shape of a wing (aerofoil) affects the lift. To investigate this relationship, Rhys Coleman designed and 3D printed his own wind tunnel! He used a drone motor and propellor to make the wind, an anemometer to measure the wind speed, and digital scales to measure the lift on the aerofoil.

The other investigation shown in the photo is the one where Lachlan Dean and Nathan Brunetto used one of our school radioactive rocks and a Geiger counter to measure the effect of a paper barrier on the amount of radiation recorded.

If you are interested in the outcomes of these experiments, their reports will be posted up in O9 in the near future.

Indonesian Tour

"On day 2 we went snorkelling and canoeing. It was amazing and an experience I will never forget. I have never been snorkelling before so it was my first time, by this wonderful experience I witnessed I would definitely do it again. We went to 3 different spots to swim, at the first spot we saw a manta ray and a turtle, and at the second spot we saw many tropical fish, a big star fish and a sea snake. At the last spot we didn’t see many sea animals but it was a warmer area. Looking under the water it was clear and very beautiful with all the coral and fish. We got to swim under water with the fish and we took many photos.

"The tour guides showed me how to make underwater circle bubbles, I was able to make one before we had to leave. Once we got back to the docks we had lunch, we then got to watch all our photos and videos that were taken while snorkelling.

"Then it was time for the canoes, Dane, Orielle and I were on the canoe together. On our way Dane saw a massive spider, we bumped into the trees and Orielle saw a spider too. We ended up with a crab and a fish in our canoe! We weren’t very good at first but we managed. After canoeing we had to leave and go back to the boat, we went back to the hotel and had dinner at an all you can eat. Overall the Bali trip has been amazing and one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, being with my friends in a different country has been scary at times but also really fun and a memorable adventure." ⁃ Maddie

"Throughout the trip to Indonesia, we have been exposed to Balinese culture and traditions, some of which have been foods, clothing, and dances. On the first day of being welcomed into Kalam Kudus Christian (the Indonesian school the bayside students attended) the girls of Bayside Christian College were introduced to the students of Kalam Kudus Christian School and were able to be a part of a traditional Balinese dance.

"We were equipped with colourful fans and shown fluid motions we were to perform at the end of our school stay. At first the dance seemed frightening, and left many of us frazzled and feeling uncoordinated. The factor of only having four days to learn it weighed on us, it was a long and tricky dance for us beginners. The students we were performing with appeared seamless and relaxed, while our movements were stiff.

"Thankfully as the day progressed, we eased into it, though we still depended heavily on the girls of Kalam Kudus Christian School. Our routine was combined with the older students and the dance appeared graceful and engaging, the colourful fans and outfits were a sight to behold with the extravagant performance.

"On Friday, our last day of attending Kalam Kudus College, we had practised numerous times, and even in our own time. The dance was definitely hard, and we definitely weren’t up to par with the dancers around us, but we did our best and had fun, creating at the very least a presentable performance.

"Overall, the students of Bayside Christian College gained so much knowledge and respect for the Balinese dance/dancers, it created a friendly atmosphere with the other dancers, and resulted in so much fun. We are thankful that we had the opportunity to further explore Balinese culture, specifically dancing, and hope to one day experience it again." - Zahra & Abbey

VCE OES Camp

Our intrepid 9 VCE OES students set off for four days of adventure around the Gippsland Lakes and we were blessed with wonderful weather. The students organised their own food, cooked and cleaned up (sort of) and participated in some fantastic walks around Raymond Island and the Buchan Caves Reserve.

They went through the Royal and Fairy Caves and led activities as a part of this wonderful trip. They also participated in an awesome MTB riding session with Sarah from Venture Out at Colquhoun Park just out of Lakes Entrance. A huge thanks goes to Toni Steinbergs for attending this trip.

Year 11 Vocational Major

Our Year 11 VM students worked with two Years 1/2 classes during a visit to the North Campus Agriculture area. The Year 11 VM students prepared wattle branches and had a great time helping the students in feeding the ravenous goats. They also walked to see the Bike track, Sheep and Alpacas further up the North Campus. A huge thank you goes to Madura Nadarajah and Anna Lam for helping coordinate this wonderful learning opportunity.

ELC Visit North Campus

The Year 12 VM class did a brilliant job working with our precious 4-year-old ELC students during their visit to the North Campus. We were blessed to have some parents and other ELC staff to help keep everyone safe as we crossed the road and fed the goats, chickens, ducks and geese. A huge thank you goes to the ELC staff for making this wonderful experience a reality.

Year 12 VM Food Drive

The wonderful Year 12 VCE VM class ran a food drive for Pantry Plus as a part of their Community Project. This project is a major assessment task for the class and they did a brilliant job creating new signage, delivering and collecting tubs and planning a marketing campaign from 3-Year-Old ELC to Year 12.

The Pantry Plus team was absolutely blown away by the generosity of the Bayside family and will use this food over the next three weeks to bless so many people struggling in our local communities. Thank you so much to everyone for your contribution to this wonderful program and to the amazing Justin Mason for helping to transport the food.
