Over the past few months Layla S, Lily M and Mr Dunn have been working on designing and producing a set of plaques to go on posts surrounding a repurposed roundabout at Barwon Valley School.
Students in Surf Coast Secondary College’s Vocational Major helped build this roundabout last year, the centre of which was created to represent an indigenous yarning circle.
The plaques, which include the names of families, organisations and community groups that have made donations towards the project, were cut into pine wood using Surf Coast’s laser cutter. The plaques contain writing and a design specifically requested by Barwon Valley school.
These plaques were varnished and handed to Barwon Valley to be put onto the posts when the roundabout opened. Students have since been given the opportunity to go and visit Barwon Valley School, meet some of their wonderful students and see the plaques for themselves on the roundabout.
At the beginning of term 2, Jack W. completed in the The Australian History Competition for 2024 for which he has been named State Champion!
Student Testimonial - Lily M.
"At the start of this year I got selected to sit an interview along with about 120 other kids to hopefully get a chance to hike the Kokoda trek. A week later I found out I'm going to be 1 out of 24 lucky people that got a chance to take on this amazing experience along with Layla and Henry who get to go in November.
In April we started training each week, Sprinting up the hills at Geelong waterfront, doing many squats and lunges while getting to know the people in our groups. When September finally rolled around it was time, I left for Papua New Guinea on the 6th of September and trekked for nine days on the Kokoda trek.
It was the most amazing thing I've ever done, meeting locals, conquering massive hills, crossing rivers, making friends and memories for life."
We look forward to sharing more about this amazing program once Henry Mc. and Layla S. have completed the trek in November!
