Assistant Principal Update

Shane Wilkie

Hello everyone,

I hope you have been able to enjoy the warmer spring weather conditions. Another jam-packed week at APS with Year 3 and Year 4 students back from their 1 and 2-night Camps.  I was lucky enough to head up to Camp Jungai with Year 4’s on Thursday, and although there were a few tired campers, the overall feel was one of excitement and adventure.

The Prep/1 students had a fantastic concert last Wednesday evening, and the excitement is building as we prepare for the 2-6 Concert next Tuesday evening. Tomorrow is the postponed book week performance by Meerkat Productions – more information below.

Today I am at the Banyule Division Athletics with a team of 14 APS students, and on Friday all Year 6 interschool sports teams will be competing in Ivanhoe interschool sports finals for Touch Rugby, Volleyball and Tennis. It is certainly a busy end of term.

The Meerkat performance will be now held tomorrow - Thursday 12 September 2024 at 9:30am for students in Prep, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4. The team at Meerkat have adjusted their program so that we could accommodate the students who were attending camp last week.

Timeless by Kate Canby - Emit (whose parents turned back time to name him) is surrounded by busyness. Dad is too busy to read stories, Mum is too busy to play games and Emit’s brother and sister are simply too busy doing nothing to do anything, at all. Emit tries everything he can think of to get more time, he tries to catch it, wait for it, but it’s not until Emit tries to buy some time that he learns the secret which is, if you want time, you have to make it.

Term 4 Planning

Year level teams are currently developing the Term 4-unit plans for English, Mathematics, Inquiry, and Wellbeing. Our Term 4 Inquiry units will focus on the design and digital technologies curriculum. However, we are also focusing on integrating several curriculum subjects with our technology units to create real-life, authentic learning experiences. In addition, Term 4 will yet again see us present the APS Writers Festival and Art Show. Always an amazing evening with lots of families and students celebrating the writing and artistic talents of our students.

Gaga Pit Installation

We are very excited to announce that this week our new GagaPit will be installed in the forest area of the playground.  The Gaga Pit was one suggestion from students via the Student Representative Council (SRC) for use of the 2022 Colour Run funds, along with the playground gameboards, down ball courts and activity markings that were installed last year. Following installation we will create a timetable for class use in the first few weeks as we suspect it will be very popular.

P/1 Concert

The Prep/1 concert was truly a celebration of our vibrant Arts learning this year in Music, Drama, Dance and Visual Arts, and the students all performed amazingly! A combination of nerves and excitement backstage transformed into a delighted group of children by the end of a very successful evening.

The theme for their concert, based on a book by the same name, ‘The Colour Monster’ embraced the many varied emotions that we experience and the ways that we learn to regulate these at school and at home. Students were involved in all aspects of the performance including script writing, choreography, song choice and T shirt creation and design.

Thank you to all the families who attended and supported students. Also, to our School Captains Vaiva and Ema who performed the Master of Ceremonies role so admirably. A special thanks to our staff for suppporting their students especially Christy our Performihg Arts Teacher.

The Day We Grew Up - Senior Concert

Things are progressing well in the Year 2-6 production. On Monday 16 September we will hold a whole school run through, and then on Tuesday 17 we will do a rehearsal at the PAC at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar. Details of this event will come through Compass. There is no payment required but parents will be required to give consent for their child to travel via bus.

Within the Compass Post their will be details regarding the drop off and pick up arrangements for students on the night of the performance. Students are to be dropped off at the backstage entrance at 6:30pm, where you will be directed to the gymnasium to be met by your child’s teacher. At the conclusion of the event teachers will escort each class to a predetermined area at the PAC.

All classes have finalised costumes, and you should have received information from your class teacher about what is required from home.

Tickets for the performance are on sale now through TryBooking, Tickets are $25 each for adults and $20 for concessions. The second release of tickets have gone live so please ensure you have secured your tickets.
