28th October to 1st November

First Nations Bedtime Stories is an annual week of storytelling. This year Common Ground is celebrating five years of working with different First Nations communities to capture and share stories as old as time and bring them to our homes, classrooms and workplaces. To mark this special occasion in First Nations storytelling, Common Ground are reflecting and sharing stories from each year in celebration of the vast, diverse and profound wisdom of First Nations communities across the continent.

This year they have chosen five stories, one from each year of First Nations Bedtime Stories so far, to help explore the following First Nations themes: Country, Family, Law, Dreaming and Ancestors.

Day 1 Video - The One-Eyed Rainbow Serpent

This is the story of the One-Eyed Rainbow Serpent. It teaches us about the importance of looking after Country, so it can look after us. The One-Eyed Rainbow Serpent is a story of the Luritja people, whose lands are to the south and west of Alice Springs. It is told by Garrard Anderson – a Luritja, Pintupi, Arrernte and Warlpiri man. It was filmed in Ulumbarru – a natural spring about 250km west of Alice Springs.
