Student Spotlight

Lola Auty

Meet Year 12 student Lola Auty. Lola is the artist behind the design of the Year 12 leavers hoodies. Her winning design includes hand-drawn lettering, her favourite golden yellow, and linework that is a signature of her artistic practice.

"It was a dream I've had for a while, and I was so excited to see people wearing my artwork," Lola said. In fact, she started working on the design while in Year 10 when she first heard about the opportunity.

Additional to the class of 2024 student names, Lola chose a Bible verse, Exodus 14:14:

"The Lord will fight for you; all you have to do is keep still."

"I thought that, as young adults going through the hardest year of our schooling life, we can just be still because we have the Lord and we don't need to worry," Lola explained. "It's easier knowing that."

Congratulations, Lola, and we look forward to seeing where your creativity takes you!

Reuben Torlach

When Year 12 student Reuben Torlach visited family and friends in America recently, he had such a wonderful time that he wanted to do something significant to capture it as a memento. So, he hand-carved a timber frame.

"I wanted to create a custom frame for this core memory that I treasured with friends and family from the States," he said.

Reuben's mum is from America and his recent trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan, was his seventh visit so far. He cherishes every moment; the vibrance of relationships and adventures with friends.

"I love the connection I have with people of the same age, same faith, and being able to see my cousins, family and church family in a tight, welcoming community."

The melaleuca and Huon pine frame depicts Reuben's American and Australian heritage, with carvings of iconic national flora, fauna and objects. Blunnies, kangaroo, shark and gum blossoms for Australia. Eagles, Western boots, acorns and wolves for America. All beneath the words, 'In God We Trust'.

"No matter what we do, we can always trust in God," he explained.

Reuben completed the frame in his Design and Production class, using a Dremel and chisel.

"I'd love to go into carpentry or cabinetry for my career," he said.

And we don't doubt that he will excel at either. Bravo Reuben!
