School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

Supporting Positive Behaviour at Bendigo Primary School

At Bendigo Primary School, we believe that every child can learn and demonstrate positive behaviours when expectations are clear, consistent and supportive. Through our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework, we focus on teaching, encouraging and reinforcing positive behaviour every day.

How We Respond to Behaviour

Just as children learn reading and maths skills, they also learn social and behavioural skills. When mistakes happen, our staff respond in a calm, consistent and supportive way to help students learn from the experience.

For minor behaviours, staff work with students using a series of supportive steps:

  • Remind students of the expected behaviour.
  • Redirect them towards making a positive choice.
  • Reteach the expected behaviour by modelling what it looks like.
  • Relocate students if they need a short break to refocus.
  • Reflect with students about what happened and how they can make a better choice next time.

Our goal is always to help students develop the skills they need to be successful learners and respectful members of our school community.

For more serious behaviours, staff prioritise everyone's safety by:

  • Assessing whether anyone is at risk of harm.
  • Taking immediate action to keep students and staff safe if required.
  • Using restorative conversations to help students understand the impact of their behaviour and repair relationships where appropriate.
  • Recording significant incidents and working with families to provide additional support when needed.
  • Monitoring students to ensure strategies are successful and ongoing support is provided where necessary.

Working Together

Families play an important role in supporting positive behaviour. Talking with your child about our school values of Kindness, Respect and Responsibility, encouraging them to make positive choices, and discussing how they can learn from mistakes helps reinforce the messages they receive at school.

By working together, we can create a safe, respectful and inclusive environment where every child feels connected, supported and ready to learn.

Thank you for your continued partnership in helping our students grow into confident, respectful and responsible learners.
