NAIDOC Celebrations

Yaama Ganu!

On Wednesday, our school community gathered to celebrate NAIDOC week, honouring the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal on Torres Strait Islander peoples, our theme was “50 years of deadly”.

It was a wonderful day filled with learning, connection, reflection and mutual respect for each other and for culture.

Some highlights from our day included Kodi doing the Acknowledgement of Country in both Gamilaraay and English and Saskia and Kansas cleansing us all with gum leaves before we began, using culture to bring us together as one.

We had a truly dhirrabuu native grains workshop with Kerrie Saunders from Yinnarr-ma, fully immersing us all in how our ancestors collected grains and seeds and turned them into sustenance! The students enjoyed collecting the seeds and then turning them to flour using only their hands, a truly immersive experience!

Everyone took part in the amazing race using their language knowledge and excellent teamwork skills to decipher clues at stations set up all around the school- it was a tight race, filled with laughter and fun!

At our day's end we all took part in a collaborative art work that was tied to this years NAIDOC theme, that will hang proudly on Mrs.Whalan’s WOW wall- reminding us all we are deadly everyday!

NAIDOC Day reminds us of the importance of listening, learning and walking together in harmony.

A heartfelt thank you to our Aboriginal educators who travelled to be a part of our day, families, staff and most importantly our students who made this day so meaningful and vibrant!
