From the Classroom

We launched Term 2 with a short but exciting Week 1. After returning to Melbourne on Tuesday, our students jumped straight into hands-on coding workshops on Wednesday and Thursday. The week wrapped up with a well-earned long weekend!

Week 2 brought a major milestone: moving into our brand-new MITS school building! We celebrated this special moment with a smoking ceremony led by Uncle Colin, grounding us in Culture, as we began this exciting new chapter. Since then, students have been settling into new routines and discovering all the new features of their incredible learning space.

Here’s what some of the students — and a few teachers — had to say about the building:

  • Norah: “There are more areas where we can learn and go into separate groups to help us focus.”
  • Tony: “It’s a bigger classroom.”
  • Tyrone: “It’s a huge classroom and we can split it in half.”
  • Harry: “There are different individual learning areas.”
  • Vicky: “We get to go to Citizen’s Park at lunchtime.”
  • Cata: “We can split the classroom so the boys and girls can have their own time.”
  • Hayley: “It’s so close to the boarding houses.”
  • Jaydah: “It’s just our own MITS space.”
  • Denzel: “It’s all our own and the toilets are nice and close to the room.”
  • Bethany: “There’s a cooking area in the back!”
  • Alex: “The new comfy furniture is great.”
  • Rose (teacher): “There’s a great setup for doing art right in the classroom.”
  • Simone (teacher): “All of the breakout room spaces make it easier to support different groups and learning needs.”

Year 7s are diving into the fascinating world of Ancient Egypt in History, learning about time in Maths, and practising ‘sizzling starts’ in Writing to hook their readers from the first sentence. They’re also working on creating their own Acknowledgment of Country in Intercultural Studies with Ms Lia.

Year 8s have been exploring what a typical day in the life of a Pharaoh might have looked like, tackling fractions in Maths, and learning about the circulatory system in Science, where students looked at a model of the heart and then completed different activities to observe the changes in heart rate.

Some other highlights this term include a special visit from Matilda’s star Lydia Williams, who shared her journey in soccer and spoke with the girls about leadership and building confidence. Year 7s also enjoyed lunch with the Richmond Football Club, where they had the chance to meet and chat with some of their favourite AFL and AFLW players.

It’s been a fantastic start to the term and we have so much more to look forward to in the coming weeks.
