ReDesign for Her Hackathon
We’re thrilled to share the success of a group of our students who recently participated in the Redesign for Her Hackathon, hosted by Monash University. This dynamic and thought-provoking event invited young female-identifying students from across Victoria to explore how design and innovation can be reimagined to better meet the needs of women and girls.
The hackathon was inspired by a growing awareness that many everyday products, systems, and technologies have been historically designed, tested, and optimised for men—often overlooking the unique experiences, bodies, and needs of women. From safety in public spaces to health tracking apps, there are countless areas where inclusive design can make a meaningful difference.
Over the course of the day, our students worked in teams to brainstorm and prototype innovative, female-friendly solutions to real-world challenges. We’re incredibly proud to announce that two of our student teams were recognised for their outstanding ideas, winning 2nd and 3rd place in a highly competitive field.
This experience not only fostered creativity and critical thinking, but also empowered our students to use design thinking to advocate for equity and inclusion. The confidence, collaboration, and leadership they demonstrated were inspiring, and a testament to the power of student voice in shaping a better future.
Congratulations to all involved—your ideas truly have the potential to make a difference!
Student reflections
The Redesign-For-Her Hackathon was an incredible opportunity. I learnt so much throughout this event, not only about how women could be more empowered, but also about collaboration, creative thinking, and problem-solving under pressure. It was inspiring to hear women speak and shared their experiences. Most importantly, this experience boosted my confidence and motivated me to keep exploring the tech world. I left the hackathon feeling empowered, supported, and excited for the future.

The event provided a unique opportunity to showcase our creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, all while addressing a meaningful issue related to the challenges faced by females in today’s society. A key part of the day was preparing and presenting a business pitch to judges although it was stressful due to the time constraints. This was a valuable opportunity to practice our presentation and public speaking skills. With plenty of food to keep us energized, the event was both fun and productive. We learned a lot about tackling real-world problems and worked in teams. Overall the hackathon was an inspiring and memorable experience, leaving us with new skills and a deeper understanding of the challenges women face.

We thought the Redesign for Her Hackathon curated by Monash University was an incredible, empowering experience. It made us realise just how many obstacles women go through during our lives and how we need to take action on behalf all the beautiful women around us. Everyone involved was super sweet and outgoing, eager to shape a brighter future around sexism and equity. Though we didn’t expect it, the Hackathon was truly a remarkable experience all around. (Especially the food!)

Yesterday we had the opportunity to participate in the redesign for her all girls hackathon at Monash University. It was a great experience, as we worked in groups to come up with a product and pitch to solve a problem faced by women. It was very helpful to build strength in public speaking, as we had to present our pitch to a group of girls and judges. It also built teamwork and innovative skills. We got given free merch, and my group came second so we got Monash Uni teddy bears! We also got lots of food which was so good!
