Boarding News

Mr Jim Noble, Assistant Head of College - Boarding

A flu vaccination clinic will be held at the school this Wednesday, 30th April for boarders. Parents and guardians have been informed of this opportunity and I really hope to see many boys turning up to receive this protection against the flu. The weather is starting to cool down and we inevitably will face the usual onset of flu season and all of its unwanted consequences. The proactive step of receiving a flu shot will help enormously to keep everyone well.

I was very proud of our entire boarding cohort who attended the local Anzac Day Service at Ashgrove Memorial Park last Friday morning, 25 April. We joined a large crowd from our local area in observing this solemn occasion and maintaining such an important tradition. There was some light rain during the march which did not deter the boarders. I was impressed and proud of the way the boys participated. Their uniform and behaviour was excellent and they represented our school particularly well.

The Term 2 Boarder Parent Network (online) meeting has been rescheduled to Wednesday 7 May starting at 5:00pm. This is due to a clash with online Parent Teacher Interviews on the original meeting date. I encourage you all to jump online and listen to the key information presented at this meeting and to support the College’s efforts to provide the best experience in boarding for all the boys.

A reminder that we have the Boarding Family Day on Saturday, 31 May at the College. This will be part of ‘Super Saturday’ where we have a home game of sport against St Edmund’s College and also an Old Boys function. We are looking forward to welcoming all families in our boarding community to the boarding tent which will be adjacent to McMahon Oval throughout the day. There will be great hospitality and activities, as well as the opportunity to tour our boarding facilities. I look forward to seeing many of you at this casual function which presents a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet others who have sons boarding at Marist College Ashgrove.

I’m really looking forward to what promises to be a busy and fulfilling term. Please make contact if I can be of assistance and hopefully I will see many of you if you’re visiting the College.

Boarding Recreation

It was a quiet start to the term on the recreation front with many boys making the most of the ANZAC long weekend. The boarders did a brilliant job leading the march at the Ashgrove service and it was great to see such a strong turnout from the broader Marist community. After the early start we headed down to the Kangaroo Point Cliffs for a walk along the Brisbane River and tackled the near vertical KP stairs back up to the top! An hour in the pool and run around in the gym rounded out a busy Friday.

Most of the boarders were involved in sports trials on Saturday with Football & Rugby trials taking place throughout the day. Recreation is normally a touch lighter during term two with the boys stuck into their training and playing schedules. The day of sport was rounded by an impressive performance by the 1st XV with many boarders putting in great shifts to secure a comfortable victory ahead of round one against Iona College.

On Sunday morning the junior boarders headed down to the Flats to run in the Ashgrove Junior Parkrun which is a great way for them to get up and start their Sunday! Later that morning a group headed over to Brookside to stock up on supplies for the term ahead and an hour in the gym / pool rounded out Sunday before heading up to Mass.
