From The Team

Welcome back to Term 2!

We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable break, with time to recharge and connect with friends and family. It’s been wonderful to see all the smiling faces back at school, ready for another exciting term of learning and growth.

What a fantastic start we've already had! The grade 3/4 students have been busy reinforcing their skills through Rainbow Maths, and diving into the Write to Read program where they are learning the building blocks of spelling and decoding words through coding techniques. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their confidence growing as they apply new mathematical strategies and literacy skills. Their positive attitudes and willingness to take on challenges are truly commendable — well done, grade 3/4s!

In Writing, we’ve begun our unit on Information Reports. A big thank you to Mrs Foenander for leading an engaging session all about our class pet, Bruce the blue-tongued lizard! Students were fascinated to learn about what Bruce eats, where he lives, what he looks like, and some amazing facts about blue-tongued lizards. As part of the lesson, students practised their note-taking skills using a graphic organiser, gathering important information to later use in their own writing. The highlight for many was getting up close and personal with Bruce — what a unique learning experience!

The past fortnight has also been a busy and exciting time! Be sure to check out the photos in our newsletter to see what we’ve been up to. Highlights include our excursion to Bunjilaka at the Melbourne Museum, the Cross Country running event, a Project Rockit incursion, and a special breakfast to celebrate our amazing SPS mothers.

Here’s to a fantastic Term 2 ahead! The 3/4 team wishes all the incredible mothers in our community a very happy Mother’s Day.

What We Are Learning

What We Are Learning In Specialist Classes              In Term 2

Visual Arts

This term students will explore sculpture, threads and aboriginal art. They will experiment with stability, form and aboriginal symbols when constructing a paper sculpture of a brolga. Students will be introduced to the artwork created by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers, creating a paper and wire armature of an animal which will be wrapped with threads. Students will further develop their knotting, winding and weaving skills whilst learning to name different types of threads.

*You may be wondering why students did not bring home all their Term 1 artwork. There will be an Art Show in Term 4, so I am keeping some of your child’s art as I plan to include 2 pieces from every student in the show. All masterpieces will be returned at the end of the year.

Cultural Studies

Cultural Studies has been introduced to all students this term. Each term the whole school will have a focus, and a cultural day or activity will be planned at the end of each term. The focus for the term starts off with Our World and then narrows to take an in-depth look at Australia. There is a damper day planned for the end of term.

This term, students will explore the continents, countries of our world, oceans and seas. They will identify the six Australian States and two Territories, and their capital cities. Students will learn about various natural features that can be found in Australia, our national flags, and their symbolism.

Performing Arts

In Performing Arts lessons, students will learn about melody and harmony. They will improve their ability to recognise intervals as the musical distance between lower and higher notes. Students will also develop their ensemble skills using Call and Response, and by playing together as a group with an awareness of song structure.

Physical Education

This term in PE, students will be introduced to all of the athletic events that make up our District Athletics Carnival. They will learn the correct technique and practise these skills. They will be eligible to try out for our school District Athletics Team. All students will finish the term with a golf clinic provided by the Sporting Schools Program.

Science

This term in Science we will focus on the area of Chemical Science. We will explore matter and each of its states (solids, liquids and gases). We will investigate the properties of each state and find examples in our environment. We will conduct experiments to determine how adding and removing heat can cause changes in the state of matter. We will plan and practise an experiment to present to our junior school and community at our Science Fair later in the term.

Reminders

  • Reading Logs: These are due back at school each Friday. Daily reading is essential for your child’s development. Please help by reminding them regularly.

  • Homework: Homework is due every second Friday. This term, we ask for your support in encouraging your child to complete and return their homework by the due date. The tasks are designed to reinforce skills taught in class and help students retain new knowledge.

  • Last term, we sent out an invitation for parent volunteers to assist in the classroom by listening to students read and discussing the books with them to build comprehension skills. A big thank you to those who have already volunteered! If you're interested, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Note: All volunteers must have a current Working with Children Check. Information is available at the school office.

  • A gentle reminder that students should be bringing a clearly labelled water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day as well fresh fruit or vegetables to eat during class as brain food.

  • Lost property has been relocated to the area outside the Year 3/4 classrooms. To help avoid lost items, please ensure that all removable clothing is clearly labelled with your child’s name

  • Lastly, as some of our students have allergies to nut products such as Nutella, peanut butter and nuts, we kindly ask that these items not be included in lunch boxes where possible.
