Hello to our wonderful Year 1/2 families!
It’s hard to believe we’re already in Week 3 — the term is flying by! We’re back in full swing with plenty of fun, excitement and learning happening across the level. The students had a blast baking delicious Anzac biscuits with Donna, and we’ve enjoyed some wild and wonderful learning moments too. Mrs Fox transformed into Sir David Attenborough, while Miss Whittington brought animals to life with her costumes — all to help students gather facts for their writing in a fun and engaging way.
In Integrated Studies, we’ve been investigating the fascinating world of minibeasts, and our level's ‘Creative Director’, Mrs Fox, has been teaching us new artistic skills like tracing everyday objects to make perfect circles, folding paper to add a 3D effect, and using folds to guide our drawings.
We’ve also had our first hands-on incursion focusing on how to be healthy so we can thrive — the students loved their first session learning about healthy lunchboxes.
Magical Maths Monday!
On Monday 12th May, all F–2 students will enjoy a maths-filled day of fun! We’d love everyone to dress up with a magical maths twist. Here are a few fun costume ideas - stick your favourite number on a t-shirt, dress as something magical like a fairy, wizard or magician, or decorate a top with numbers or maths-themed pictures!
But the magic doesn’t stop there! We’re inviting families to join us in the classroom from 3.00pm to see the children’s amazing maths masterpieces and join in some fun maths games together. We can’t wait to share the magic with you!
Education Week is next week! We’re looking forward to a week filled with learning and community spirit. Here’s what’s happening:
-Tuesday 13th May: SPS Literacy Open Morning, 9.00–10.00am in classrooms (all parents welcome)

What We Are Learning
What We Are Learning In Specialist Classes In Term 2
Visual Arts
Students will be creating minibeast collages and paintings this term. They will explore space in their collages, using layering and overlapping, and further develop their fine motor cutting skills. Students will experiment with paint applications using card, rollers, scrapers, sponges, bubble wrap and brushes. They will revise primary and secondary colours, and differentiate between warm and cool colours.
*You may be wondering why students did not bring home all their Term 1 artwork. There will be an Art Show in Term 4, so I am keeping some of your child’s art as I plan to include 2 pieces from every student in the show. All masterpieces will be returned at the end of the year.
Cultural Studies
Cultural Studies has been introduced to all students this term. Each term the whole school will have a focus, and a cultural day or activity will be planned at the end of each term. The focus for the term starts off with Our World and then narrows to take an in-depth look at Australia. There is a damper day planned for the end of term.
The Year 1/2 students will be introduced to the features of the world, continents and countries. They will then look at their place in the world, learn about their state, their city and town. They will also explore the symbolism of our national flags.
Performing Arts
In Performing Arts lessons this term, students will be learning the melody for Ode to Joy on xylophones and keyboards. They will be reading, responding to, and replicating rhythmic patterns using 4/4 timing, singing, and playing the major scale using classroom instruments, and developing their skills within a musical ensemble.
Physical Education
This term in PE, Year 1/2 students will be revising the technique for the Fundamental Motor Skills catch, underarm throw and overarm throw. They will apply these skills in games, while working on their strategy and team work skills. All students will participate in a golf clinic provided by the Sporting Schools Program.
Science
This term in Science we will focus on the area of Chemical Science. Students will learn about materials. They will investigate the different types of materials objects are made from, explore the properties of different materials and assess the suitability of materials for specific uses. They will experiment with changing the shape of materials by bending, stretching and twisting.
Reminders
Excursions - payment and permission: Please check Compass for details about our upcoming excursions.
Construction materials: Over the next 2 weeks, we would be so appreciative if you could collect and bring in some construction materials for the students to use. They have been researching a particular minibeast which they will be constructing out of craft and recycled materials. Some ideas could be:
- Bottle tops
- Yogurt pouch lids
- Small boxes
- Yogurt tubs
- Plastic bottles
- Bubble wrap
- Spare crafty items you have lying around (eg. pipe cleaners, tissue paper)
Communication folders: Please remember to bring these to and from school each day. We really appreciate your support with this.
High Frequency Words: Help your child to practise their high frequency words each night. They are stored in their blue display folder in their communication folder.
Yellow Reading Log: Record your child’s nightly reading. The students are very excited to be receiving their rewards when they reach the main checkpoints!

Baking Anzac Biscuits
Last week, the grade 1/2 students excitedly rolled up their sleeves to bake delicious Anzac biscuits. The activity helped them explore the significance of Anzac Day, while developing practical skills like measuring, mixing and working together. The sweet smell of freshly baked biscuits filled the school and the students were proud to share and enjoy their creations!
Non-Fiction Book Explorers
Our curious grade 1/2 students have been exploring the features of non-fiction books, discovering how tools like headings, diagrams and captions help us learn new information.
Writing Is A Wild Adventure
The students were treated to a wild and wonderful learning experience when Mrs Fox transformed into Sir David Attenborough and Miss Whittington brought animals to life with her creative costumes. The fun-filled performances helped spark curiosity and laughter while students gathered fascinating facts to use in their writing. It was a memorable and engaging way to bring non-fiction learning to life!
'Healthy Eating So Kids Thrive' Incursion
This week, Year 1/2 students enjoyed their first incursion run by EACH, ahead of our Knox Community Gardens excursion. In our first session of the ‘Healthy Eating So Kids Thrive’ program, the students explored ‘Go, Grow and Glow’ foods, and learned how everyday foods help their bodies stay healthy. Students also had fun building their own healthy lunchboxes!
House Cross Country
On Thursday 1st May, our Year 1/2 students took part in the whole school House Cross Country event. They tried their best, showed great enthusiasm, and loved earning points for their houses!
