Upcoming Important Dates

From The Team

Welcome to Term 2!

I was so happy to see the children happy, refreshed and ready to learn after the holidays. Many students had exciting stories to share about their adventures, such as going to the movies, visiting grandparents, and having play dates with friends.

On the holidays

Mrs Maguire: I spent time taking my two dogs, Ollie and Oscar, for lots of walks, and went out to lunch with friends.

Tracey: I went to visit my wonderful grandchildren, and went on road trips to Wodonga and Barooga.

The Foundation students have already been very busy participating in the House Cross Country, investigating Dinosaurs, and utilising the outdoor learning space whilst the weather has been so beautiful. On Monday, the students also had a hands-on incursion focusing on how to be healthy so we can thrive!

Next week is EDUCATION WEEK and there are lots of exciting activities planned such as Literacy Open Morning on Monday (9.00-10.00am) in classrooms; on Wednesday (8.15- 8.45am) there is Grandparents & Special Friends Breakfast Club followed by Grandparents & Special Friends Open Morning with shared morning tea, from 9.00-11.30am, and Open Night from 5.30-7.00pm.

Magical Maths Monday!

On Monday 12th May, all F–2 students will enjoy a maths-filled day of fun! We’d love everyone to dress up with a magical maths twist. Here are a few fun costume ideas - stick your favourite number on a t-shirt, dress as something magical like a fairy, wizard or magician, or decorate a top with numbers or maths-themed pictures!

But the magic doesn’t stop there! We’re inviting families to join us in the classroom from 3.00pm to see the children’s amazing maths masterpieces and join in some fun maths games together. We can’t wait to share the magic with you!

Thank you for your ongoing support

What We Are Learning

What We Are Learning In Specialist Classes              In Term 2

Visual Arts

In Term 2, students will create collages to further develop their cutting and pasting skills. Students will explore different glues, and the art elements of colour, shape, line, space and texture. They will also explore a variety of painting applications using scrapers, rollers, sponges and brushes. Students will view, discuss and create fauvist art, inspired by Claudio Malacarne’s Cow Painting, and experiment with a crayon resist, rainbow colours, and water-soluble pastels.

*You may be wondering why students did not bring home all their Term 1 artwork. There will be an Art Show in Term 4, so I am keeping some of your child’s art as I plan to include 2 pieces from every student in the show. All masterpieces will be returned at the end of the year.

Cultural Studies

Cultural Studies has been introduced to all students this term. Each term the whole school will have a focus, and a cultural day or activity will be planned at the end of each term. The focus for the term starts off with Our World and then narrows to take an in-depth look at Australia. There is a damper day planned for the end of term.

The Foundation students will be introduced to the features of the world, continents and countries. They will then look at their place in the world, learn about their state, their city and town. They will also explore the symbolism of our national flags.

Performing Arts

In Performing Arts this term, students will work on the musical concepts of pitch: note (and letter) recognition, familiarisation with patterns and learning melodies. They will also work on the musical concept of rhythm: working to identify pulse, timing, and patterns using call and response and rhythmic notation.

Physical Education

This term in PE, Foundation students will be introduced to the Fundamental Motor Skills catch, underarm throw and overarm throw. They will learn the correct technique for each of these skills. They will play modified games to practise these skills and develop their teamwork. All students will participate in a golf clinic provided by the Sporting Schools Program.

Reminders

  • Communication folders: Please remember to bring these to and from school each day.

  • Library bags: Foundation M borrow from the Library on Thursday.

  • Brain food: Please pack some fruit or veggies for your child to eat each morning during our ‘brain food’ time. We request no ‘drippy fruit’ please.

Try This...

Cup Telephones

This science experiment for five-year-olds is super simple – all you’ll need is some cups, some cotton string and a paper clip.

Once you’ve completed the activity, perhaps you could ask your children to talk about the different ways that they communicate and use devices - from phones to computers, and more!

To create a cup phone, you'll need two cups, a piece of string and, optionally, paper clips. Poke a hole in the bottom of each cup, thread the string through, and tie a paper clip (or knot) to secure the string on the inside of each cup. Then, have two people stand a distance apart, keeping the string tight, and one person can speak into their cup while the other listens with their cup to their ear.

Fun Day At Swimming (End of Term 1)

To celebrate the end of the 2-week swimming program, students participated in fun games and activities. The slide was the favourite!

Autumn Leaves

Students enjoyed collecting, counting and sorting autumn leaves. They had lots of fun pouring the leaves over each other.

Mother's Day Breakfast

Many families participated in the special Mother's Day Breakfast.

House Cross Country

Well done to all the Foundation students for completing the course!
