Principal Message

Friday 16th May

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear families,

I hope all our Mums, Nannas, and special people felt truly spoilt last weekend by the thought and care our students put into creating their Mother’s Day cards and warm wishes. It was also lovely to see the excitement and pride on students’ faces as they carefully selected gifts from our Mother’s Day Stall. A huge thank you to Aysha Rowe for coordinating this much-loved tradition once again. Aysha’s efforts along with the support of so many parent helpers, ensured students had another valuable opportunity to complete their thoughtful shopping and carefully consider the perfect gifts for the special people in their lives.

It has been an incredibly positive and energising fortnight at Mitcham Primary School! I want to send a huge thank you and congratulations to our teachers, students, and families for helping us celebrate all that is positive about education and community at Mitcham Primary School.

Our recent Open Morning and Open Afternoon were real highlights, showcasing the vibrant learning culture we are so proud of. A special thank you must go to the 50 incredible Year 5 and 6 students who volunteered as tour guides, year level ambassadors, and Specialist area guides. The feedback from prospective families was overwhelmingly positive; many commented on the maturity, confidence, and clarity of our students as they shared their insights and led groups around the school. It was such a powerful reminder of the pride our students take in their school and their learning.

To our existing families, thank you for attending these open events and showing your children how much you value and celebrate their education. Your presence sent a clear and affirming message: that their learning matters and is something to be proud of.

We also had a fantastic turnout at our Student Wellbeing, Voice, and Agency Parent Forum. We are so grateful for your interest in this important area of school life, and the thoughtful feedback you shared.

For those who couldn’t attend, we discussed the concepts of student voice and student agency. Simply put:

  • Student voice is about listening to what students think and feel about their learning.
  • Student agency is about empowering them to take an active role in shaping their learning experiences.

At Mitcham PS, these ideas come to life in many ways, including such practices as weekly student-led class meetings, student participation in termly grade level teacher planning days, co-created assessment rubrics, lunchtime clubs initiated and run by students, and authentic involvement in classroom decision-making. These opportunities build ownership, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Lastly, a big thank you to all who supported our Lamont Book Fair. As well as sparking excitement and a love of reading, your support contributes directly to fundraising for our school library, a space that continues to grow and thrive because of your generosity.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Warmly,

Erin
