Professional Learning: Phonics

This year at BNPS, teachers in Foundation, and Grade 1-2 are very excited to be participating in a study being conducted by the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO). The project is called ‘Using professional learning to strengthen effective teaching of phonics.’
Our participation means that we receive high quality, evidence based professional development in teaching reading and spelling. We are gradually moving through the theory components and teachers have begun to apply some of the theory to their teaching practice. Over time we will continue to refine our practice and instructional routines to maximise student learning in reading and spelling.
In order for AERO to measure the impact of teacher professional learning, they require information that is ascertained through an assessment called the Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). This is a research-backed, internationally adopted reading assessment tool. All teachers in F – 2 are assessing their whole class using DIBELS. If you are a parent/carer of a child in F – 2 (except for Grade 1-2A) and you have not yet consented to BNPS passing on your child’s reading progress to AERO, please consider consenting to assist AERO in measuring the impact of their professional learning (the attached PDF has a QR code for consent and further information).
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Katrina Gouramanis.
