Introducing MacqLit Program to Years 7-8 for Enhanced Reading Skills

Learning to read is a complex task. It requires a solid understanding of the connection between letters and sounds, otherwise known as phonics. The extensive body of research regarding learning to read, highlights the benefit of explicit, systematic teaching about these connections.

The Primary school systematically teaches the skills of reading through whole class InitiaLit sessions in K-2, and through the MacqLit program delivered via our Academic Co-Curricular program in Years 3-6.

In 2024, we are excited to be extending the MacqLit program into Years 7 and 8. This intensive literacy intervention program is targeted to students who require a boost in reading, whatever the cause of their difficulty, and is delivered in a small group format.

MacqLit is an explicitly delivered reading program that promotes the development of:

  • letter-sound correspondences
  • strategies for decoding multisyllabic words
  • prefixes and suffixes
  • oral reading fluency

The InitiaLit and MacqLit programs have been guided and informed by more than three decades of scientific research into effective reading instruction. Both programs were developed by MultiLit, a research-based initiative of Macquarie University.
