Ministry

Have you ever asked yourself ‘What makes a good leader?’

It’s a question that has been on my mind recently, especially as we have recently installed our Student Executive, our Student Leaders, and amongst them three leaders I will work closely with, in the role of Student Spiritual Leader – Emily Becker, Nyeesha Kesak, and Aiden Young.

I have become more and more convinced that a good leader has three key qualities:

1) They are humble. A good leader knows that they have some skills, knows that they have something to offer – but especially when they are young they do not realise just how exceptional they are as people – in fact, most good leaders need someone else to point out to them their skills, their character, and their heart for others, before they start leading to their potential.

2) They truly care about people. A good leader wants to serve and wants to make a difference – to live in a way that positively benefits others. Their heart breaks when they see people suffering, and they want to both be there for them, and do something about it.

3) They seek help. Good leaders don’t just seek help to achieve a dream or a vision, or pursue a goal or a dream – they seek help in forming it, knowing that others always have something valuable to contribute.

I see all of these qualities in our new Student Spiritual Leaders, in our Student Executive, and in our Student Leaders as a whole, and it is a joy to see. And I also see these qualities in Jesus, whose humility meant that he only exalted himself when it would benefit others, cared so much for others that he was willing to be broken on the cross, and sought help – from his friends, from his Heavenly Father, and from us in his work in the world today.

Please join me in welcoming the three senior students into the position of Spiritual Leaders for this year.
