As our students progress through their school years, regular check-ins are vital to ensure they are mastering the essential reading, writing, and mathematics skills that set them up for future success.
At St Joseph’s, our teachers engage in an ongoing, weekly cycle of learning driven entirely by student evidence and data. While student progress was traditionally measured only through formal pen-and-paper testing, modern research shows this can be limiting. It doesn't always reflect a child's true strengths or—most importantly—what they need to learn next.

Real-Time Adjustments in the Classroom Data collection isn't just something that happens at the end of a unit; it happens every single minute. Throughout our daily lessons, teachers use deliberate Checks for Understanding (CFUs). By constantly monitoring student responses mid-lesson, teachers can gauge exactly who is grasping the concept and who needs extra help. This allows them to pivot and adjust their teaching on the spot—re-teaching a tricky concept immediately rather than waiting for a test at the end of the week.
To ensure we are meeting every student at their current point of need, our teachers gather insights from a diverse range of sources, including:

This comprehensive data helps teachers understand exactly what knowledge and skills each student possesses, allowing us to tailor our support. It highlights who requires targeted intervention, as well as who is ready to be stretched and challenged.
Mid-Year Assessments & Next Steps
Last week, our Year 1 to 6 students began their mid-year PAT (Progressive Achievement Tests). This standardised data gives us a clear benchmark of how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy. Combined with our ongoing classroom observations, this data is used to map out individual learning goals, ensuring every child continues to grow and flourish.

Save the Date: Student Learning Conferences
Later this term, we look forward to sharing this data and insights with you during our Student Learning Conferences. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and collaboratively set the goals that will guide their learning for the rest of the year.
