Message from the Principal
This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with our Junior and Senior Student Leaders to hear the outcomes of the design thinking workshop they facilitated with students last term regarding ‘Balmoral Celebrates Multiculturalism’. This workshop laid the foundation for a truly student-led Multicultural Week, with our Belonging Prefects presenting an exciting range of ideas designed by students, for students.
The vision is both ambitious and inspiring. Students have proposed an opening ceremony at our whole-school assembly, a Multicultural Olympics, a fashion and cultural celebration, and a culinary experience that will bring together students, staff, families, and our wider community. The major celebration is planned for Tuesday, 20 May, during lunch and Period 4, when our school will come together to honour the diversity, stories, and traditions that make Balmoral State High School such a vibrant learning community. As we continue to plan and enable students to have ownership over the vision of this week, I look forward to sharing further updates as they become confirmed.
I will continue working closely with our student leaders over the coming weeks as they transform these ideas, mitigate risks and draft the weekly plan. Enabling student agency is one of the most rewarding aspects of school leadership. When students are empowered to lead and create, they strengthen not only their own capabilities but also the culture, belonging, and connection of our entire school community.
As we approach Parent-Teacher Interviews, I also want to acknowledge the critical role our families play as partners in learning. These conversations provide an invaluable opportunity to strengthen the connection between home and school, celebrate progress, and collaboratively support each student's learning journey. While these interviews are time bound, teachers are provided with minimal mandatory breaks throughout the night. If you have not been able to secure an interview, I encourage parents to make contact with teachers to highlight concerns, connect in with teachers or share experiences of learning that is occurring at home for our learners.
Strong partnerships between school and home are fundamental to student success. By engaging in these important discussions, families gain deeper insights into their child's learning, wellbeing, and next steps for growth. Together, we can ensure every student feels supported, challenged, and inspired to achieve their very best.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for the many ways you contribute to the strength of our Balmoral community.
Regards,
Timothy Barraud
Principal
