From the Principal

Dear Blue Mountains Grammar School Families,
Back at School
It is great to be back at school after two weeks of sabbatical at the end of last term. I have a lot to share from that time, and rather than attempt to do it justice in a newsletter piece, I will instead be offering a series of parent sessions where I can present my report and observations in full.
But let me give you a snapshot of my sabbatical.
I have had it confirmed that we are living through one of the most significant moments in the history of education, and that is without exaggeration. The world our students are entering has already changed, not is changing, and the gap between that reality and how most schools operate is widening.
During my sabbatical, I visited and studied some of the world's most compelling schools including High Tech High in San Diego. I had the chance to explore what it looks like when rigour, student agency, design thinking, and real-world partnership come together in ways that genuinely prepare young people for the world ahead. I also spent considerable time asking a question that I believe should sit at the heart of everything we do at BMGS: what would make us uniquely better?
The observations that emerged from that time are both honest about where we are and deeply hopeful about what we could become.
These sessions are planned for Weeks 5 and 6 of this term and will include a range of options to suit different schedules and locations; daytime and evening sessions at both Springwood and Wentworth Falls, as well as a dedicated session at Lithgow for our families in that community who are still affected by the closure of the Great Western Highway.
Please keep an eye out for further information as the details are confirmed. We would genuinely love to host you at one of those evenings.
ANZAC Day — Thank You
To every student and family member who made the effort to attend an ANZAC Day ceremony across the Blue Mountains this week I would like to say, ‘thank you’. It means a great deal.
BMGS had representation at most services across the mountains, and for that we are both proud and grateful. What made it all the more encouraging was seeing the photos that came through of our students in attendance, standing in full school uniform as a mark of respect for those who have served. It was a heartening sight, and a reminder of the character of this community.
A Note Worth Reading
As my contribution this week is brief, I draw your attention to the piece written by Mr Sanders, which is well worth your time. His reflection on his visit to San Diego for the Deeper Learning Conference is a thoughtful and worthwhile read. It provides another perspective on the exciting time before us.
Looking Ahead
Term 2 is always one of my favourites. The weather is always beautiful, if not a little cold, but is a term with a rhythm that others don’t have. There is a lot to look forward to, and if the energy of the first days back is anything to go by, our students are ready for it.
To everyone, thank you for your continued trust and partnership.
Here's to a wonderful Term 2.
Warm regards
Steven Coote
