BBPSLife

Felix watering our thriving vegetable gardens!

This week in BBPS Life we detail what our students will be learning in term 2 through their knowledge-rich units.

Our knowledge-rich units are designed to build students’ understanding of the world by explicitly teaching important content across key curriculum areas, including History, Science, and Civics and Citizenship. Rather than focusing solely on generic skills, this approach prioritises deep, domain-specific knowledge—giving students the background information they need to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and engage more confidently with their learning.

Teachers use explicit instruction to introduce and develop core concepts, vocabulary, and ideas, ensuring all students have strong foundations. Within this structure, there are also opportunities for application and further inquiry, where students can explore, apply, and extend their knowledge in purposeful ways. Literacy is intentionally embedded throughout each unit, with a focus on reading, writing, and speaking about rich content. Research shows that the more background knowledge students have about a topic, the better they are able to understand what they read, make connections between concepts, retain details in their long term memory and participate in learning—leading to improved engagement, comprehension, and overall achievement.

Grades 1 and 2

Grade 1/2s began their term already busily thinking about their biology unit on plants - thanks to our families who started our exploration of moss over the holidays. Students will be taking a deeper look at how plants grow, what plants needs to survive and the features of plants.

Grades 3 and 4

If you haven't been over to the hub this week, be sure to visit our cute little chicks as they hatch and grow (we will share photos in the next newsletter). Our hub students are well into their living things biological unit- where deeper concepts are being studied by reading and analysing non-fiction information texts, conducting vocabulary studies to learn scientific language, and embracing the role of scientist by honing reporting skills and observational writing techniques. Key ideas explored this term include:

  • living things can be distinguished based on observable features
  • categorising consumers, decomposers and producers and the food chain relationship
  • different living things have different life cycles
  • living things depend on the environment
