Year 6 Newsletter

Year 6 Fortnightly Newsletter: Weeks 3 & 4

Dear Parents and Guardians of Year 6 Students,

We hope this newsletter finds you well. It's been another busy fortnight in Year 6. Here's what your child has been up to in the classroom.

Mathematics:

In week 3 we wrapped up our time unit. We are now learning about Volume and Capacity. The students have started to use their knowledge to create their very own water parks!

Writing:

In writing, we have continued our mentor novel War Horse and worked on our own narratives, ‘Journey to the unknown’. Over the fortnight we have been focusing on our action and problem paragraphs.

Inquiry: Can I afford to buy that?

This week we have looked at the difference between Goods and Services, and explored the reality of our lives as “consumers”. In preparation for starting our upcoming businesses we also started to explore profit.

Reading: Lit Circle Meetings

In week 3 we began our first rotation of literacy circle meetings. We have noticed a huge improvement in the way our Year 6 students are comprehending and responding to their texts.

From now on students will only have one week to complete their reading and roles. Most students will need to complete their reading at home - this can be documented as home reading for diaries. Please check in with your child about this.

Celebrations

Eltham College Production

We were very grateful to be invited to Eltham College’s rehearsal of the Music Man Jnr. The students really enjoyed the fabulous show!

Mixed Volleyball

Our mixed volleyball team played in Division finals on Monday at Diamond Valley sports centre. The whole team played exceptionally well with some awesome digs and serves. We missed out on % getting through to Regionals, despite 2 wins and 1 loss. Well done to the whole team!

Boys Basketball

Our boys basketball team played in the Regional finals Tuesday. They played really hard and gave it their all! Overall they came second place, an amazing achievement!

Mixed Softball

The mixed softball team played Division finals on Thursday 17th October against Apollo Parkways P.S. The team played so well and all supported and encouraged their teammates, showing excellent sportsmanship. We missed out on progressing to the Regional finals but have had a fantastic season!

Solar Incursion

Origin came out and talked to us about renewable energy. We learnt about the 789 million people in the world living in poverty who don't have the same access to electricity. We reflected on how lucky we are and made buddy lights. These solar powered lights are being sent to children in Papa New Guinea to help them study at home when it gets dark.

Upcoming Events and Reminders

Homework - Weekly reading diaries are now due on Fridays. Mathletics tasks are set and should be completed each week. These tasks complement the work we are doing in the classroom.
