Year 5 Newsletter

Dear Year 5 Families,

The sun is out…no it’s not….oh yes it is! Hang on, I need my jumper again!

We are wrapping up our poetry work this week and will be embarking upon writing information texts. Our young writers will be diving into the world of research and informative writing, exploring a range of topics that captivate their curiosity and are linked to our Pop Culture unit. They will be mastering the art of structuring information, and developing clear and concise paragraphs. As they delve into this engaging process, they are not only enhancing their writing skills, but also expanding their knowledge on a multitude of subjects. We are eager to witness the growth and creativity that will undoubtedly shine through in their information texts.

Our Year 5 students have successfully completed their unit on volume and capacity. Throughout this unit, they developed a solid understanding of measuring, comparing, and calculating the volume of various objects. The students have demonstrated great progress in applying these skills to real-world situations. In the upcoming weeks, our Year 5 students will be learning to compare 12- and 24-hour time systems. They will explore how to read and interpret time in both formats, identifying the differences and similarities. Additionally, they will work on solving practical problems that involve converting between the two systems. This will help them develop confidence in applying these skills to real-life scenarios, such as reading timetables, planning events, and understanding international time zones.

Our Student Leadership Induction Program is well under way! It has been delightful working with the students in their mixed groups. They have been open to stepping out of their comfort zone to work with new people, challenging themselves to reflect on their strengths and areas of growth, and most importantly having a laugh along the way! The Building Blocks to Leadership have been introduced. In the coming weeks, participants will have the opportunity to develop these skills within themselves more deeply. The teachers walk out of these sessions with a smile, as we are continually impressed with the students' willingness to grow and better themselves.

We started Term 4 by launching back in time to the Bugle Boy of Company B, air raids, rationing and split-neck floral dresses with the 1940’s. As we move through a different decade each week, the students have been watching the ABC series ‘Back in time for Dinner’ to relive the era in a typical Australian household, listen to songs from the time period, create trivia questions about the major events, fashion, technology, film and fads from the decade.

We’re encouraging the children to chat to older members of their families (or friends) every week to find out what each decade was like. The Pop Culture Inquiry topic is a wonderful way to expose the student to how much we have changed in such a relatively short period of time.
