Senior School News Yr 5/6

Mr Tom Brophy (5/6B), Miss Carrie Kudelka (5/6K) & Miss Chelsea Perrin (5/6P)

Welcome back!

We’ve had an incredible start to Grade 5/6 this term and can’t believe the year is already coming to a close. The cohort has been tremendous at knuckling down, completing what they need to over this last term, while also using required lunchtimes and spare minutes to help organise events, such as District Cricket and Graduation.

LITERACY

In Literacy this past month, we have been honing in on biography writing. The students have been looking at the differences between autobiographies and biographies - the type of language used to convey a certain tone, and how to synthesise research on their chosen subject. Knowing how to chronologically order their information while also grouping it into sub categories is a complex task, and the Seniors have shown great understanding and skill. Additionally, they completed one of their final narrative assessment pieces for the year - ‘Up, Up and Away’ - where they demonstrated exceptional descriptions and understanding of grammar.

NUMERACY

Our first unit of the term – Money and Financial Maths - is about to wrap up in 5/6. The students have shown great engagement with the topic, showcasing their abilities in rounding decimals, calculating percentage discounts and unit prices, as well as finding change from a given amount of money. This week, students researched the pricing of ingredients needed to make Halloween sugar cookies, determining the difference in price across grocers, as well as discounted prices, before applying this recipe in real life! Additionally, they’ve had great fun undertaking ‘Finance Quest’ during a few of our lessons to solidify a mixture of understandings from this topic.

INQUI-RE

This term, Inquir-RE has focused on social justice - not only in the present, but historically. Students have shown great interest in expressing their knowledge of key historical moments, as well as learned how to correctly timeline these. Consequently, they will use their knowledge of these moments in time to write a historical narrative from the perspective of a key figure from their chosen event. Also, students will continue to unpack how these social justice movements and events link to our Christian morals and their relevant Bible stories.
