Grade 3/4 Camp

Camp Recount

Katheen Lim (Grade 4)

On the 24th of October 2024, the Grade 3s and 4s left to go to CYC the island, the camp we were heading to. At about 9.00am, we loaded our luggage onto the buses and started to leave the school. After forty-five minutes of sitting still on the bus, we stopped at the Royal Botanical Gardens Cranbourne for our fruit/snack break. After that, we had a bit of a walk there.

Then we continued for one hour on the bus until we reached the Nobbies. At the Nobbies, we ate our lunch. We stopped there so that we could see the adorable penguins that Phillip Island was known for, and get an awesome view of the gorgeous blue ocean nearby. The wind was blowing onto our faces, giving us a refreshing scent of the clear ocean. After seeing the penguins, we hopped back into the bus with twenty minutes until CYC.

When we arrived at the campsite, we got put into our cabin groups. We got time to settle into our cabins. Next, we were put into activity groups, then we had one activity. My group did the Giant Swing. We had harnesses on, and then one by one, we got a chance to swing.

After that, we had dinner. There was spaghetti bolognese and garlic bread, it was really yummy. Then, we had a night walk to the sign at the front, then went back and had a trivia quiz. Finally, we went to sleep.

On Thursday, we had a choice of cereal, porridge, or toast for breakfast. After refueling, we had two activities. My group did flying fox, then pedal racing. The Flying Fox is a little scary in the beginning, but if you get used to it, it is fun! Pedal Racing is really tiring. My fastest speed was eleven, and the fastest speed ever recorded was twenty-one!

Next, we ate delicious burgers with juicy patties and fresh salad for lunch. After that, we received icy poles to cool us down. A few minutes later, we had another two activities, and my group had the Pinnacle, which was rock climbing, and archery. If you have ever been to the top of the Pinnacle, there is something interesting on the roof next to it. We managed to do archery in the rain. Even though we were wet, it was still really fun.

Then we had free time. Free time was to prepare for getting wet. We were going to the beach soon! When we arrived at the beach, many people instantly took off their shoes and splashed in the cooling water. Everyone was excited. Soon after, Mr. Bunyon took some photos and announced a sand-sculpture-making contest. Tanya, Elinor, Imogen and Christine were in my group, and we molded a cute octopus named Oggie. He won second place in the contest! If you have ever met him, he likes waving. Make sure you say hi!

A few minutes later, we returned to the campsite and got time to shower and clean up. An hour later, it was dinnertime. We had chicken, chips and salad served with delicious, smooth gravy. For dessert, we ate sponge cake with cream. A few minutes later, we had a movie night, and we watched Migration. It was about ducks and stuff. Then we went to sleep in our cabins.

On Friday, it was the same thing for breakfast. Next, we had a scavenger hunt. We were looking for letters around the campsite. I was in a group with Tanya and Imogen. We won third place! After that, we had about fifteen minutes to prepare to depart for school by bus.

After forty-five minutes on the bus, we stopped at another beach, and we had our lunch there. We also got to experience looking at pelican feeding. They were so close to us! It looked cool. There was Steven, Bob, Twiggy, Hiddy, Swimmer, Leedah and Lady Maya (I and Tanya named them). After that, we rode back for another one hour and twenty minutes. When we arrived at school, we got to play outside.

Overall, I think the camp was fun!

Hillary Li (Grade 3)

From October 23rd to October 25th, the Grade 3 and 4 students went to CYC The Island in Cowes for three days. We experienced many new activities such as the Giant Swing, Flying Fox, Pedal Racers, Pinnacle and archery. The Giant Swing was really fun and when you went to the top, you could see the whole campsite! The Flying Fox was eighteen metres long and gradually sloped down. We practised for a while at the Pedal Racers and then had a race. There was an electric sign to show our speed. The record was twenty-one km per hour, but mine was only sixteen km per hour. During the Pinnacle, it was basically rock climbing with a harness. When we did Archery, we learnt to put our arrow in the correct position and how to aim properly. You had to pull the string back and let go.

For Movie night, we watched Migration. It was about a family of ducks going on an adventure to explore the world. When we had free time, we could go upstairs to the dining room, play on the trampolines, the low rope course and many more.

On the last day, we participated in a letter hunt. The goal was to figure out the clues, go to the place and write down the letter. The first few groups to finish writing the phrase would get a lolly or a chocolate.  The food at the campsite was absolutely delicious! We had spaghetti, burgers, nuggets and chips and buns. There were also some scrumptious desserts, such as cake, ice cream, icy poles and biscuits. If we added vegetables to our plate, we (sometimes) would get a lolly. The teachers would give us a chocolate from a big box if we were kind or helpful. At the end of the day, the teachers would pray with us and help set our bed if we needed help.

Overall, I think that camp was an excellent experience. It was about going out of your comfort zone and trying your best. I am looking forward to the camp next year!
