Stage 1

Teaching & Learning

Term 3, 2024

English

This term, our Stage 1 students will dive into the fascinating world of perspective and argument in English! Through engaging texts and lively discussions, students will learn how to recognise different viewpoints and understand the power of persuasion.

In reading, students will explore various persuasive texts, such as picture books with strong character viewpoints. They will develop skills to identify the author's purpose and the techniques used to influence the audience.

In writing, students will practice crafting their own persuasive pieces, learning how to express their opinions clearly and effectively. They will focus on structuring their arguments, using high modality language, and supporting their ideas with reasons and examples.

By the end of the semester, students will not only enhance their reading and writing skills but also gain confidence in sharing their perspectives! We're excited to see their creativity and critical thinking shine as they learn the art of persuasion!

Students will continue engaging in literacy groups throughout each week throughout the term. These small group sessions are designed to reinforce the skills and knowledge they've gained from explicit lessons in reading and writing.

Each week, students will engage in focused reading activities with their teachers, allowing for targeted support. These sessions will help them progress towards their individual learning goals, fostering a deeper understanding of texts and enhancing their literacy skills. By working in small groups, students will also benefit from collaborative learning, sharing ideas, and building confidence in their reading abilities.

Maths

This term in Stage 1, will delve into exploring a variety of mathematical concepts. Our lessons are designed to combine explicit teaching with independent activities tailored to each child's needs, ensuring challenging and engaging learning experiences. Each lesson will include explicit instruction to ensure clear understanding, followed by differentiated independent activities for students to practice and consolidate their learning.

Weeks 1-3: Representing Whole Numbers, Time, & Mass Students will start by learning to represent whole numbers in various ways, enhancing their number sense. They'll also dive into understanding concepts of elapsed time, and discussing daily routines. Additionally, we’ll explore the concept of mass, comparing weights of different objects through hands-on activities.

Weeks 4-6: Combining & Separating Quantities & Position In these weeks, students will focus on combining and separating quantities, which will help them build a solid foundation in addition and subtraction. They will also learn about position, using language and concepts related to location and direction, which will be reinforced through fun and interactive activities.

Weeks 7-9: Forming Groups, 3D Objects, & Volume Towards the end of the term, our focus will shift to forming groups, where students will practice grouping objects to lay the groundwork for multiplication and division. They will also explore 3D objects, identifying and describing their properties. We will conclude the term by investigating volume, using practical activities to measure and compare the space that objects occupy.

History

Stage 1 continues their learning about the past in the present this term, with our attention turning to how technology has shaped our lives. Students will develop their knowledge of the use of technology in their homes and community and in particular how one form of technology has affected people’s lives.

For homework this term, students have been asked to discuss a piece of technology with a parent or carer in their household. Students will be asking about the technology, the changes its made and the impact it has had in the world.

Science

This term in science, students will be developing their understanding and knowledge of the material world around them. Through engaging and hands-on activities, students will build an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of materials and apply that knowledge to building their very own recycled city! Our focus for the cities will be on the sustainability of resources, which we are also covering in English! We can’t wait to show all parents our cities later on in the term! Watch this space!

As we are focusing on the material world, students will participate in a design project midway through the term. We ask students to start collecting recycled materials at home to help them create their designs. Materials can include paper towel rolls, cardboard packages, plastic bottles, etc. Classroom teachers will notify parents when materials need to be brought in.

PDHPE

This term in PDHPE, students will be investigating how healthy food and personal hygiene choices can hep make their environment healthy and safe. Students will be learning about different types of healthy food. They will also be exploring looking at different cultural food practices, including bush tucker in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. They will continue participating in SISA activities to promote physical activity and develop cooperation skills to practise a range of fundamental skills with equipment.

CAPA

In Term 4 Visual Arts, Stage 1 students will embark on an exciting journey into the world of visual arts by exploring the fundamental elements of art: line, shape, colour, texture, space, and form. Through engaging hands-on activities and interactive discussions, students will discover how these elements come together to create expressive artworks.

In the study of drama, we explore the three fundamental elements of drama and implement them in our storytelling techniques through games and role-play. This involves analysing multiple short stories, exchanging ideas, and asking questions about the characters, plot, and theme. We then apply these skills in role plays, both through guided and independent work in small groups. Students merge their understanding of scripts and utilise it across various themes in role plays, narratives, or dramatic interpretations.

LOTE

In Term 4, students will explore places of importance in China and compare famous landmarks in both Australia and China. They will learn about how to pronounce those places and the history behind each place. Students will participate in craft and play-based activities during Mandarin lesson time to practice how to introduce the places in Mandarin. Students with prior knowledge will learn to create longer sentences describing the selected places in Chinese characters.

Korean Bilingual

For Korean CLIL lessons this term, students will be learning Korean terms for different healthy food and hygiene practices. This will link to our PDHPE program in term 4.

Library

This term in the library Stage 1 will be finishing off their digital timelines by completing a personal timeline of some key moments from their own lives. This timelines will be created in Google Slides and will use a range of computer skills explicitly taught throughout Term 3. For the latter half of Term 4, students will be working on developing their keyboard skills. We will be using a range of activities and fun games to improve their typing accuracy and rate.

EAL/D

Throughout the term students working on all phases of English as and Additional Language or Dialect, will continue to be supported in their classroom by specialist teachers and classroom teachers. Each program of learning content provides differentiated instruction and activities for all students to achieve progress in their learning.
