The joy of learning

I am sure students were not amused when I asked them during Monday Chapel to say to the person on their left, “Mate, thank God it is a Monday!” Monday is certainly often seen to be the most unpopular day of the week. Friday is reasonably the most loved day as students think of the exciting weekend ahead when there is no school! However, I believe that one of the secrets of being successful at anything that we set out to do is to be excited about it.

When we know the eventual benefit of doing something, chances are that we will gladly do it, and with enthusiasm. Psalm 122 says, “I rejoiced when they said to me, ‘Let us go unto Jerusalem.’” The Jewish people rejoiced at the prospect of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Jerusalem was a special city for them.

They believed their God dwelt there. In the temple they felt his presence with them. They passionately prayed that God would protect this beautiful city where tribes came to find peace in such a hostile world. I challenged students to think of places which make them feel glad and joyful when they visit, for example going to the beach, visiting the zoo, the park, or the aquarium. I also then encouraged them to think of school as a place to rejoice about since it is where they are prepared for their bright future.

While high school comes with a range of challenges such as assessments, tests, and exams, the joy is in what lies ahead, when one finally celebrates their Year 12 Ball, Year 12 Breakfast, Year 12 Handover Assembly, and their Valedictory Night. Surely, the daily journey to school is worth it.

A student must therefore sing in their heart, “I rejoiced when they said, ‘Let us go to school.’”
