Writing

Writing Recipes Based on Our Classroom Cooking Sessions!

Over the next two weeks in our writing lessons, Year 2 will be exploring the features of procedural texts. They will specifically focus on understanding the structure and writing elements of recipes.

Why Write Recipes?

Writing recipes is a fantastic way for students to develop their procedural writing skills. It requires clear and concise instructions, an understanding of sequence, and the ability to communicate effectively. Through this hands-on approach, students will not only enhance their writing abilities but also gain practical life skills in the kitchen. This exciting program will be closely linked with our classroom cooking sessions led by the talented Mr. Marco.

What to Expect:

  1. Interactive Cooking Sessions:
    • Mr. Marco, our expert chef, will guide students through a pizza making lesson. Mr Marco’s sessions will provide a fun, collaborative environment where students can learn the fundamentals of cooking.
  2. Recipe Writing Workshops:
    • Students will learn to write their own recipes, detailing ingredients, measurements, and step-by-step instructions. They will be encouraged to use descriptive language to make their recipes easy to follow and engaging.
  3. Creative Expression:
    • Writing recipes allows students to express their creativity. They can experiment with different ingredients, flavours, and cooking techniques, and then share their culinary creations with the class.

How You Can Support:

Parents and guardians are encouraged to support this initiative by:

  • Encouraging your child to share their recipes and cooking experiences at home.
  • Provide opportunities for your child to practice their cooking and recipe-writing skills in your own kitchen.
  • Celebrate and acknowledge their culinary creations and written work.

Math

Over the next two weeks, students will be completing a range of maths assessments. This will help teachers understand where each student is placed with their learning in relation to the mathematics curriculum. This data will help teachers cater for students academic needs over Semester 2. As mentioned in our last newsletter, below are the Maths skills which the level 2's have been learning about this Semester.

Mathematical concepts the Level 2's have covered so far, this year:

-place value of digits for numbers up to 4-digits

-ordering numbers small and large numbers

-skip counting skills (forwards & backwards)

-renaming numbers using 1's, 10's and 100's
