Community &

Positive Environment

Welcome to the latest edition of our school newsletter. As we embark on another exciting term, we are thrilled to share the wonderful achievements, upcoming events, and important updates from our vibrant school community.

The term started with our annual cross country. Students in Year 7-9 made their way down to President's Park to compete in the 2km track. This was a qualifying round for Division Cross Country. Well done to those students who managed to run the full course without stopping and qualified for regionals but its great to see the students getting outside and in our community.

Our afterschool program was a highlight of the term, featuring an exciting array of activities that kept our students engaged, active, and having fun. We offered volleyball, soccer, and boxing fit sessions, each providing unique opportunities for our students to develop their skills, build teamwork, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The volleyball program saw students spiking, serving, and setting with great enthusiasm. Many of our budding volleyball players have shown significant improvement in their skills, and it has been a pleasure to watch their confidence grow with each practice and match.

Soccer sessions were equally popular, with students eagerly taking to the field to showcase their dribbling, passing, and shooting abilities.

Boxing fit, a new addition to our afterschool lineup, quickly gained a dedicated following. This program combined the fundamentals of boxing with high-intensity fitness training, offering a comprehensive workout that challenged both body and mind. Students learned discipline, focus, and resilience as they practiced their jabs, hooks, and footwork. The boxing fit sessions were not only a great way to release energy but also an excellent means of building strength and self-confidence. It was rewarding to see students embrace this new challenge with determination and enthusiasm.

Overall, it was wonderful to witness so many students take part in these afterschool activities. The energy and excitement they brought to each session were contagious, and the benefits of their participation were evident in their improved fitness, enhanced teamwork skills, and increased self-esteem. Our afterschool program continues to be a cornerstone of our school's commitment to providing a well-rounded education, and we look forward to offering even more opportunities for our students to thrive in the coming terms.

On Tuesday 14th of May, Micheal Flahive and Lauren Jones, coaches from Iramoo Basketball Club came and held a come and try sessions. Lauren has just return from USA where she plays basketball. They took the students through a basketball training session and students have been provided the opportunity for the students to join their club on the weekends. Thanks to Mr Barker who supervised this event.

On Friday 14th of June, Mr Barker ad 13 students ranging from Year 8 through to Year 11, assisted Westgrove Primary School host their Gala Day which saw our students umpire and essentially, run both AFL Football and Soccer (Football) games. The students were amazing! They were very patient, very understanding and very adaptable. Some students required some mentoring but were confident enough to umpire sports they were not entirely comfortable with after some time.

It was an amazing networking opportunity and an opportunity for students to develop further passions in sport.

Well done to the Year 9 team who held their wellbeing day on Thursday 20th of June. You can read in the Yr 9 update more about the day, but this opportunity came about through a partnership with Wyndham City Council, who recommended us for a fantastic program funded by the Bicycle Network. The program was called Mind, Body, Pedal and its objective is to inspire, energise and empower female identifying students to embrace an active lifestyle. As studies have shown only one in ten teens aged 15-17 meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise. This declines with age especially amongst female identifying students. There were 4 workshops the students rotate through across the day.

MIND: where qualified youth workers chat to the group about issues such as – self esteem, your inner critic, peer pressure, challenging social norms.

BODY: this session shows how important body movement is and that physical activity doesn’t always have to be fast paced. Led by an experienced yoga and body movement teacher the group chat about mindfulness and are taken through a series of breathing and stretching exercises.

PEDAL: 5km bike ride around their local community.
