Glen Education Edithvale

An Environment of Creativity and Wonder.
By Jess House, Early Childhood Educator
At Glen Edithvale Kindergarten, we use the environment as the third teacher to harness children’s curiosity and independence.
We regularly rotate our indoor and outdoor spaces with new resources which we have noticed, recognised and responded to meet the children’s individual interests.
Our learning spaces are open ended, as we play, we are learning together. We promote children’s sense of agency by having each child choose their own locker each time they attend kindergarten, rather than having a set position for them for the year. Upon entering in the morning, they have a locker label they identify as their own name which assists with their literacy and ability to transition to school with confidence.
Children have access to areas in their room which assist with self-regulation, including blankets, sensory toys, fidget toys, and a cube to lay down in. Children are encouraged to recognise and embrace a range of emotions, and are offered spaces which ensure their wellbeing is secure.
Offering a space which allows comfort assists with connecting home and kindergarten. We are mindful of how a child perceives their space and are conscious of setting up things which are easily accessible for them. We enjoy promoting creativity, wonder and excitement as children use their mind and body to learn and explore many spaces at kindergarten.
