Charlton College Year 11 and 12 students are provided with several different pathway options, which if chosen, allows them the opportunity to link with local businesses and learn lifelong skills for employment all whilst continuing to study at school.
This week we would like to give a special mention to Hugh Sait, our Year 12 VM student who is currently completing a Head Start School Based Apprenticeship as a Diesel Mechanic with O’Connor’s, each Wednesday and Thursday in Birchip.
Hugh completed Year 10 Work Experience at GEOTechnical Engineering, one week as a Boiler Maker and one as a Diesel Mechanic. Hugh also studied VET Automotive in Year 10 and VET Engineering in Year 11. All previous experiences along with work experience at O’Connors during his school holidays, allowed him the ability to be confident with his decision to start a local apprenticeship as a Diesel Mechanic.
Hugh has been working on all types of farm machinery including; headers, air seeders and sprayers. During his time in the workshop Hugh has had the opportunity to work in a team environment. He has also had the opportunity to work on call outs where he attends farms and assists in mechanical repairs. Hugh is looking forward to attending Trade School in Wagga.
Head Start is a revised model for school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBAT) undertaken by students which allows them to spend more time in paid work and on the job training to develop the skills that industry and employers need whilst also attending school to work toward a Year 12 qualification.
Students are supported by a Head Start Coordinator, their role is to support students to ensure they are progressing well with their schoolwork, training and employment.
During the SBAT students enroll with a training organisation to complete a Certificate II or III level qualification.
If you would like to know more about the Head Start Program, please contact your Head Start Coordinator Mary-Ann Sait on 0400 696 156 or Mary-Ann.Sait@education.vic.gov.au
Thank you O’Connor’s and Mary-Ann Sait for your partnership.
