Dear Parents and Carers,
HAPPY SACRED HEART DAY!
Sacred Heart Day is the annual Feast Day of Chevalier College, and as such, is a day of great celebration and significance for our community. This year we celebrate on Friday 14 June, finishing off another busy school week by commemorating the legacy of Jules Chevalier, a pioneering MSC visionary priest, and the values he instilled in our College. Jules had the courage to envision a new era guided by the Gospel's message of love and care for all women and men, and his emphasis on love, kindness, compassion, understanding, respect, and inclusivity remains as relevant today as ever.
We begin this day with our Sacred Heart Day Mass, where students, staff, alumni, parents and special guests gather to reflect fondly on the essence of "being MSC." We recognise the significance of faith in nurturing our collective humanity, and we pause in the busy routine of school life to remind ourselves what we treasure and value about our Chevalier community.
Following the Mass, students and staff take part in festivities and events chosen to instill connection through a sense of family, as well as express pride in their contribution to and participation in College life. The day concludes with the ever-popular Mission Concert, showcasing our talented students in what is always an incredibly enjoyable evening for everyone involved.
Through the commemoration of Sacred Heart Day, Chevalier College reaffirms its commitment to upholding the mission of the MSCs first established by Jules Chevalier, ensuring it remains at the heart of everything we do. This occasion serves as an annual milestone moment where we reflect on all that is good in the lives of our students in our MSC community.
On this Sacred Heart Day, let us collectively honour Jules Chevalier's vision by embodying his call to "Be on Earth the Heart of God" in our many unique ways. We joyfully hold in our hearts on this day MSC Constitution 32:
Ours is a spirit of family and true friendship formed by kindness and understanding, by compassion and mutual forgiveness, by gentleness, humility and simplicity, by hospitality and a sense of humour.
Flipped Mondays – Parent Survey
We continue to receive feedback via the actionresearch@chevalier.nsw.edu.au email address, and the Parent Survey which opened on 7 June, which can be found here.
As we review the feedback, there appears to be the misunderstanding that Years 7, 8 and 9 are doing a full day of Flipped Learning on Flipped Mondays. This is incorrect. All parents are encouraged to refer to your child’s timetable in Parent Lounge or in the Orbit app. When doing so for students in Years 7, 8 and 9, you will note they have three face-to-face ‘regular’ classes and three flipped learning classes on a Monday. As such, students are not spending a full day in the same space doing flipped learning in silence.
What has also emerged is the point that students should be able to talk and to ‘collaborate’. Collaboration is defined as ‘the ability of students to work with others to give and receive feedback, co-construct ideas and solutions, and strengthen relationships with and among others.’ (Michael McDowell ‘Developing Expert Learners’.) Collaboration is a skill developed throughout the week, but it is not a feature of flipped learning, which is specifically designed to foster individual learning, not collaboration. Furthermore, flipped Mondays specifically target surface-level learning activities which students can complete on their own, as they would if they were doing their homework at home. Students are therefore not required to collaborate, or chat, during their three flipped learning sessions on most, but not every Monday.
Additionally, when assessed properly as per the University of Melbourne accreditation guidelines, 'collaboration’ needs to consider 7 elements of collaboration, these being:
As already stated, collaboration is a skill developed throughout the week, but it is not a feature of flipped learning, which is specifically designed to foster individual learning, not collaboration.
PLEASE, don’t forget to complete the survey. As part of our commitment to encouraging parents to provide feedback, we announced the Parent Survey in last week’s Need to Knows on 7 June, and sent a reminder as an Orbit alert around 5.00pm on Wednesday 12 June. We will also be sending another Orbit alert reminder early next week, with a final reminder in next week’s Need to Knows. The survey closes at 9.00am on Monday 24 June and we look forward to receiving your feedback.
Students and families are invited to contribute to the Winter Appeal in one of the following ways during Weeks 5-8 (27 May - 20 June).
Every little bit counts.

There have been an increasing number of students being dropped off in the No Stopping Zones on Charlotte Street each morning near the Gate 4 entrance and Gate 3 exit. It has also been observed that cars are double parking in these zones and students are crossing a very busy section of road which has blind spots. Numerous buses travel this section of road and enter and exit the Gate 4 driveway from both directions.
This is a serious safety concern for all students. Please do not drop students off on Charlotte Street. We ask that you use Pickup Point A (Moss Vale Road entrance) or Pickup Point B (Eridge Park Road entrance).
We are writing to inform you that the College has undertaken a review of payment methods currently accepted.
After careful consideration, a decision has been made that the College will no longer be accepting American Express cards. This will come into effect from Monday 22 July 2024. Please note this does not apply to donations through the ‘Shield & Heart’ website or enrolment related fees.
The following payment methods are accepted:
