Year 3/4 Report

More brilliant learning in our middle school!

Welcome Mrs Lorigan!

We are so lucky to have another wonderful member join our class, Mrs Eadaoin Lorigan, who now works Thursdays and Fridays. Mrs Lorigan has been welcomed warmly by all of our students!

Just a few quick questions...

When our students were informed we were being visited by some players from the Melbourne Demons Football club there was a lot of excitement! Knowing we would be given the opportunity to ask some questions of these players, we wanted to make sure we did a thorough job of it! In class students unpacked elements of interview questions. They reflected on two key ideas for the type of questions that were best to ask:

Students went to work typing up their questions before we met the players. For our meeting these were all printed and ready to go, the only thing that each student was missing was their press pass!

We have recorded some of the questions we were able to ask the players below. Please enjoy having a read!

Information Reports!

Students this term completed some absolutely fantastic learning on Biological Science. They reflected on the difference between a living and non living thing, and delved deeply into the features of animals. This included a strong focus on grouping animals based on different criteria, including the scientific way that this is done. Students learned how people who research animals place them into defined groups including mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians and more!

Students then selected an animal of their choice to present an information report. Students learnt all about the structure and purpose of these reports, including how paragraphs are used to separate ideas. An important theme of this learning was research, we understand the internet is such a fantastic resource to find information! However, if we want to pass this information on to our reader, we understand it is not fair to just copy someone else's work. Students worked diligently to take facts and pieces of information they had found and rewrite them in their own words. All students completed a fantastic information report on a range of animals such as Sharks, Ducks, Pikas, Frogs and much more! Please enjoy a selection of some of our information report paragraphs below!

Chemical Science

We are so lucky this term to not only study one area of science but two! After learning about all things living earlier in the term, students have now moved on to Chemical Science! This has involved thinking about materials in our world such as metal, plastic, glass and wood, and the different uses they have. Another element of this has been reflecting on the heat and the effect that placing or removing heat can have on different objects. For example, we took some ice creams into our classroom and made predictions about which would melt the fastest!

The students enjoyed an incursion from PrimeSCI, during which they were able to test some of their learning with further hands-on experiments. Please enjoy some pictures below! Like any good science incursion there was a chance to see something explode!

And there's more!

As always we could keep going if needed! In mathematics students have finished their unit on measurement and have been practicing balancing equations. This has included practicing addition and subtraction with regrouping, using both mental and written strategies.

We are continuing to read our class novel 'Wishtree', making predictions and connections as we go. Students have done a wonderful job taking part in class discussion and waiting their turn to share their thoughts.

Students have been learning all about the sacraments of the Catholic Church. They have looked at the symbols of these sacraments and made connections between modern day sacraments and the events of the Gospel.

We look forward to the coming school holidays for a break, before launching into the second half of our year!

Take care everyone,
