Year 5/6 - Newsletter

Dear 5/6  Parents

Camp is nearly here for the Year 6’s and the students are so excited. We had a camp meeting last Friday to go over a few things with the students, and to clarify some questions they had.

Important Year 6 Camp info:

  • Please arrive at the Adventure Playground by 8.30am and check in with their classroom teacher.
  • Students must have a packed snack & lunch for the first day in a small backpack.
  • Water bottles and their wide brimmed school hat
  • Luggage (including sleeping bags) stacked in classes (please remember a pillow case)
  • All medication checked in with Cara (please try to arrive a little earlier if you have medication)
  • All students with asthma medication will be given their school ventolin/spacer by their classroom teacher on the morning of camp. These students will carry this with them during the day, and at night in cabins.

The buses will be leaving by 9am. Due to the camp program, the bus cannot be delayed for late arrivals and will be leaving at that time.

Year 5’s have a program set for the week, including specialist classes, planned curriculum lessons in the classroom and some Naplan practice.

This week in Year 5/6:

English:

We revised the suffixes -ment and -ology and looked at the prefix ped/pod/pede (foot).

In structured literacy we continue to read War Horse and work on our own narratives “Journey to the Unknown”. Most classes are writing the action and problem paragraphs, using ambitious vocabulary and grammatical features modelled in the text-based unit.

Maths

Students have been working on tasks using the cartesian plane. We have tracked the flight of an Osprey and played Battleships. Students continue to be set tasks in mathletics for follow-up practice.

Inquiry

This week we started our Migration speeches - they are fantastic!  Well done to all our students (and families) on this great work. The speeches and migration stories were interesting, thought provoking and a great insight into our family history. Common themes in our classes are just how grateful we are to be growing up in Australia, and how amazing these journeys to Australia were.
