Truganina College Homework

Truganina P - 9 College Homework

Homework has a positive effect on student learning. Professor John Hattie’s research found that in the early years of schooling homework has a small to medium positive effect size (0.15), while for secondary students, the effect size is much stronger (0.64), demonstrating excellent impact

At Truganina P - 9 College, students are expected to actively engage and complete homework throughout the year.

Across the College, students aim for 300 Nights of Reading. This homework activity builds student background knowledge, literacy comprehension skills, and a love of reading. Students record their reading in their student planners and teachers provide feedback weekly on their progress.

Students challenge and extend themselves to reach 1000 points in Mathletics each week. Mathletics provides personalised mathematics learning opportunities and learning through gamification. Teachers monitor,  analyse and discuss student progress with their students regularly making links to current units of learning.

A new addition to our homework at the College is the introduction of our fortnightly homework choice boards. Choice boards allow students to review and consolidate new knowledge from two subject disciplines. Students must complete three (3) learning experiences in a row that pass through the centre square. Tasks in each square have been carefully designed to scaffold students learning from retrieval to mastery. Students receive feedback in a range of modes: whole class, small groups, individual and teacher comments during the homework cycle and following submission.

Students in Year 7 - 9 began homework choice boards in Term 1, Week 4. For our primary students, the homework choice board will be introduced in Term 2
