Performing Arts

This week, Year 1 embarked on an exciting drama lesson filled with creativity, quick thinking, and imaginative storytelling!
To bring this to life, the children took part in a fun improvisation activity using random picture magnets. Each magnet featured a different object, and as they picked one at random, they had to think quickly, using their voices, actions, and movement to weave it into an improvised story.
From flying umbrellas to talking teapots, the ideas they came up with were fantastic to see as they embraced the challenge with confidence and enthusiasm. We cant wait to see the developmental impact on their writing skills over the year.
We then took our storytelling a step further by linking it to our ongoing learning about rhythm and tempo in music. We discussed which types of music might suit the stories they created—would a slow, gentle melody match an adventure to an unknown forest, or would fast, energetic beats suit a story packed with action? This encouraged the children to think about how sound can enhance a performance, making their stories even more engaging.
It was wonderful to see every child embracing creativity without the fear of making mistakes, and they left the lesson buzzing with excitement. Who knows? We may have some future playwrights and actors in our school!
