Helping Your Child Handle Schoolyard Disagreements

Friendship troubles are normal, but children can learn to handle them well. Here are simple tips from Rebecca Sparrow to help your child manage small schoolyard conflicts, find good friends, and avoid drama.

1. Conflict Is Normal

All friendships have ups and downs. Teach your child that small disagreements are okay and can help friendships grow.

2. Speak and Listen Well

Encourage your child to say how they feel and listen to others. Practicing at home helps them feel ready at school.

3. Be Inclusive

Help your child play with different groups. If they want to change friends, they can do it kindly.

4. Find Healthy Friendships

Talk about what makes a good friend—kindness, respect, and fun. If a friendship feels bad, it’s okay to step away.

5. Lead by Example

Children learn by watching adults. Show them how to be kind and solve problems calmly.
