Year 5 & 6

Around our level

On Friday 14th March, 65 excited 5/6 students boarded buses to participate in a Sports Gala Day. We sent seven teams and each team played at a different venue. The teams were: boys basketball, girls basketball, girls kanga cricket, boys kanga cricket, sofcrosse (similar to lacrosse), volleybounce, and hotshots. Nine staff members and seven parents also participated in this day. A huge thank you to the parents for coming along and supporting us. All staff commented on the outstanding behaviour of our students. They displayed our school values, sportsmanship, and team spirit. We congratulate both basketball teams for winning their grand finals. We also congratulate the sofcrosse team as they were runners up. These nine Year Five boys had never played the game before. They usually play basketball, but they put their hands up to have a go. We also had students who shot their first goal in basketball, won their first point playing volleybounce, and bowled/batted in cricket like they never had before. The vibe in the BER, on our return, was electric, as students shared their positive experience. It was a very successful day. It was mentioned in the weekly email, but a particular shout out to Jordan K for training the basketball teams every Friday morning and for coaching the girls on the day. Thank you to Michelle S for coaching the boys. It would not have been possible for this day to go ahead without the support of parents.

Gala Day was such a fun experience. I loved playing basketball and I had such a great time. I think it was an amazing way to build friendships and to make them! I want to thank Mrs Haysom for planning all of this, I really appreciate it! We had some competition during Gala Day but we managed to make the finals and place 1st!! I love working with my team and letting everyone have a go of scoring and dribbling! I can't wait to play together again! Thank you teachers!

My highlights of Gala Day: we tried our hardest and worked as a team. I loved how we shared the ball around and made sure everyone had scored a goal by the end of all our matches. I played sofcrosse.

- Toby M

I played hotshots and my highlights on Gala Day were seeing good sportsmanship against other schools, making it to the semi finals, playing 1v1 with my friends when we had a break, going on the playgrounds, seeing people cheer other people even if they didn't make a score. Overall, the Gala Day was awesome.

My highlights with Gala Day were pretty much everything. Our team played so well, and I got to improve my skills there too. I was doubled up with people who weren’t my closest friends, but that is what made it so much fun! I think everyone in our team played to the very best of our abilities, and I had never had so much fun, playing Hot Shots nonstop.

I had so much fun with all of my friends and my number one highlight was seeing Oscar score for the first time. It made me so happy to see him happy, it made my day. He even scored against the best team in our pool. My other highlight was us winning the grand final. We won all of our games. It was such a good day and that's my Gala Day highlights .

- Oliver D

Gala Day was amazing, even though we lost, I still had fun. We played cricket and I was good at it and I also got four runs!!!!

- Aaron L

I went to The Nets to play volleybounce. We didn’t win but we played well. I loved every bit of it and the way we all cheered everyone on. At the end of the day a lady came up to us and said she loved having us and that we had the best sportsmanship and we were so happy. It was such a fun day.

- Lola O

My highlight was when I got two wickets. Both of them were run outs. One was when I was the bowler and the other one was when I was the wicket keeper.

Everyone in the team scored a goal. We passed the ball around so that everyone could get a goal.

Well, Gala Day was like going to a festival, it was so much fun! But what meant the most to me, was my friends and my team. They were the real reason I had as much fun as I did. They were so encouraging and so kind and we laughed so much. Our chant was literally one of the best things about it. It was an amazing experience, and it couldn't have gone better!

- Sophia S

My highlight from Gala Day was when Cleo got her first goal and everyone in the team was congratulating her. Another highlight was when we won the final. At half time we were down 10 to 6 and in the last 30 seconds we got a goal and won by one point 12 to 11.

I had a great time at Gala Day. Mrs. Hurley said that I was a good fielder and I liked being complimented and I think I did well, too.
