On Wednesday, our FIRST Lego League team had the exciting opportunity to visit Western Australian gyroscope manufacturer, VEEM Ltd, who produce marine propulsion and stabilisation systems. The excursion provided a fascinating experience, allowing students to see the real-world applications of physics and engineering in action.

Veem Ltd Chief Technical Officer, Tony Elms, gave a guided tour of the facility, where students observed the intricate process of assembling high-precision gyroscopes. Engineers explained how gyroscopic technology helps stabilise large ships, satellites, and even space stations. A highlight of the tour was the chance to see gyroscopes in action on the gyro-stabiliser test rig which simulates precise ocean conditions.

Students presented their own Lego robot to Mr Elms, showing how they have experimented with small-scale gyroscopes. As part of the team's innovation they are researching the use of gyroscopes on deep sea turbines.

"During our visit to VEEM, I gained valuable insights into gyroscopes, which significantly enhanced my understanding of our innovation. The demonstration of the boat gyroscope in action was particularly enlightening. I believe this visit was highly worthwhile, as VEEM's extensive experience in our field of innovation will help us demonstrate to the judges that we have thoroughly researched and dedicated substantial effort to this project." - Tom, Year 10

"I personally LOVED the experience and I definitely learned a lot from it. The experience expanded our knowledge on gyro technology and allowed us to see different perspectives and ideas to improve our innovation. We had a tour around the warehouse where we saw gyro parts and working gyros - the experts walked through the gyro parts and went through how they are usually built. Lastly, we shared our knowledge of First Lego League with the experts by presenting them with our robot, robot attachments and innovation prototype. I feel like I've become even more interested in the concept of gyro stabilisation after meeting up with professionals and I can confidently say that my knowledge on gyros has expanded and the experience was definitely worth it!" - Oviya, Year 10

The excursion was a valuable learning experience, a big thank you to VEEM Ltd for hosting our students and providing such an insightful and engaging visit!

A spirited group of JWACS students represented our school at the ACC Inclusive Sports Program, Outdoor Soccer Carnival, today. This exciting event is more than just a day of competition—it’s a celebration of teamwork, enthusiasm, and the joy of engaging in sports in a supportive and inclusive environment.

The ACC Soccer Carnival gives our students a unique opportunity to showcase their skills and experience the thrill of soccer while connecting with their peers from other schools. The carnival promotes a "have a go" approach, encouraging all participants to enjoy the game, learn new techniques, and grow as athletes. With the students from Mercy College guiding them, our students had a memorable experience and a chance to shine on the field.

One of the most exciting aspects of the ACC Soccer Carnival is its emphasis on inclusion and community. Students of all abilities come together to support each other, making this a truly special event. At JWACS, we’re proud to foster an environment where every student feels valued, no matter their skill level. The carnival encourages collaboration, sportsmanship, and the spirit of friendly competition, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.

I am incredibly proud of our students who represented JWACS at the ACC Soccer Carnival. This event provides a fantastic opportunity for them to channel their enthusiasm, embrace the values of teamwork and inclusion, and build confidence in a supportive environment. As the new Head of Inclusive Education, it’s truly inspiring to witness our students engage in an event where they celebrate each other’s strengths, support one another, and shine together.

At JWACS, we are committed to creating meaningful and inclusive experiences for our students. Supporting our students at the ACC Soccer Carnival has been a memorable and enriching experience for everyone involved.
