Supporting Home Reading
Dear Parents and Carers,
You would have noticed your child bringing home their home reading book. At St Peter’s, our Foundation and Year 1 students read decodable texts, where sounds are explicitly taught first. This helps build their confidence and develop their reading skills. As students transition to fluent reading (Years 2–6), they begin reading a wider range of texts, borrowing books from our school library to practice reading with greater ease.
We understand it can be hard to find the time and energy to sit down and read after a long day. But even short, relaxed reading sessions can make a big difference! Learning to read takes time, and every little bit helps. Here are some simple tips to make reading together a positive and enjoyable experience:
Tips for Reading at Home with Your Child:
Keep It Short and Sweet
Aim for about 10 minutes daily- short, consistent reading sessions are effective. Re-reading familiar books can also boost confidence!
Find a Relaxed Time
Try reading after a snack, bath, or dinner when your child feels calm. A quiet setting helps them focus and enjoy the story.
Make Bedtime Special
Reading before bed is a great way to wind down. It’s a chance to introduce new words, talk about the story, and create a cozy routine.
Let Them Try
If your child stumbles over a word, give them time to figure it out before stepping in with help. This builds their reading skills and confidence.
Build Vocabulary Together
If you come across a new word, take a moment to discuss it. Expanding their vocabulary helps with understanding and future reading success.

Remember, one of the best ways to inspire a love of reading in your child is to let them see you enjoying books, too. When children observe their parents' or carers' reading, it reinforces the idea that reading is fun and valuable. Your enthusiasm for reading sets a great example and creates a positive reading environment at home.
We at St Peter's thank you for supporting your child’s reading journey.
Happy reading!
