Careers News

Throughout Term 3, the Careers Team have thoroughly enjoyed meeting with all Year 12 students for their Pathway Planning meeting.  It’s such an exciting yet daunting time for so many of our young adults, as they begin to imagine a life away from Box Hill High School and step into a new way of life.  Further study, work, travel, the excitement of what lies ahead...it’s been so rewarding sharing this with so many Year 12 students, guiding them whilst making university preferences, discussing apprenticeship plans, or hearing about the exciting travels that await them during their gap year.  I can’t believe it’s been six years since getting to know so many of the students at Year 7 Camp Manyung.

The Careers Team is available to meet with Year 12 students at any time throughout the remainder of the year if they would like further advice or support planning 2024 and beyond.  We encourage students to keep an eye on Teams for information from VTAC, including key dates, until the end of the year.

We wish all year 12 students a restful, yet productive term break.

Year 10 Interview Workshop.

Year 10 Students attended an interactive Interview Workshop, facilitated by the Careers Team and our wonderful Year 10 Programs Teachers.  The teachers dressed as characters, Mr Barnett as ‘Chad the skater/surfer,’ Ms Kertes as ‘Brittany the school student,’ Ms Smith as ‘Arabella the underdressed/unmotivated teenager’ and participated in interview skits.

Topics covered included; preparing for an interview, dressing for an interview, how to make a positive first impression, the dos and don’ts of interviews.

The students contributed with enthusiasm during the workshop and special mention goes to Muneeb for getting up on stage with the teachers during an interview skit. We appreciated your enthusiasm and contribution, Muneeb!

Arcadis Experience.

Seven students in Year nine had the opportunity to participate in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Experience Day on Monday 21st August. The day was hosted by Arcadis, a global design, engineering, and management consulting company at their office in the city.

Students participated in team activities with students from other schools that were designed to challenge them with problem solving queries. They also had the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of female engineers, project managers and scientists who shared valuable information about their career pathways.

Congratulations to Ananya S for winning the award of Most Engaged Student!

Ananya has shared a reflection of the day...

The best part of the Arcadis steam day was the teamwork and the valuable lessons we gained. From the giggles, to the nervous finger biting parts of the day, each school, and each person showed amazing courage and knowledgeable skills as we worked together through the challenges of the day.  Not only did we grow closer with our groups, we also managed to encourage other groups as we were all in the same boat.  Overall, the Arcadis STEAM experience day is a must do experience that will being you nothing but happiness.

A huge thanks to Kathryn Neuschafer for organising the day and Kathryn and Eleanor Smith for accompanying the students on the day.

Year 10 Work Experience.

The Work experience Program continues to run throughout the year for Year 10 students interested in undertaking a placement.

If students are interested in the program and would like to know more, they can chat to a careers team member.  The Work Experience Handbook has been posted on Year 10 Teams for easy access for students.

This term we have had the pleasure of supporting students during placements at Swinburne Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing, Ashburton Medical centre, La Trobe University Science Dept, Eastern Health Pathology, Australian College of Dramatic Arts, Planet Architecture, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and National Australia Bank.

We look forward to students sharing their experiences when they return from placement and supporting students with placements in the future.

A reflection about the Work Experience Program from Victoria W who attended a three-day placement at Ashburton Medical Centre...

Three days at Ashburton Medical Clinic for work experience was an amazing and insightful experience.  On the first day, I was nervous but excited to immerse myself in the healthcare field.  I was greeted with warm smiles by the doctors, receptionists, nurses, and patients. Throughout the course of my work experience, I was exposed to the empathy and compassion the doctors showed towards patients.  Observing the general practitioners taking the time to listen attentively to patients' concerns allowed me to understand the importance of a doctor-patient relationship and showed me that medicine is not just about treating illnesses, but also supporting and caring for people holistically.  It was great to see diversity amongst the patients I encountered, and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the stories they brought with them.  On the technical side, I had the opportunity to sit in with different GP’s and develop a further understanding of the equipment used in the healthcare industry.  From learning how to measure blood pressure, to using an otoscope to examine ears, I have had a meaningful glimpse into the life of general practitioners.

Overall, my three-day work experience at this clinic was a fun and valuable experience.  It opened my eyes to the dedication and compassion required in the medical field and ignited a passion within me to pursue a career in medicine, though I am still exploring which specific path to take.  I am so grateful that I had this incredible opportunity and thank you to the careers team at BHHS and members of Ashburton Medical Clinic for making this work experience possible!
