Stage 1

A message from Stage 1

Welcome to Week 6. The last fortnight has been full of learning, fun and laughter for Stage 1.  A highlight for many students (and teachers) was beginning our gymnastics unit with our first visit to the Armidale City Gymnastics Centre. We had a ball! We also celebrated the Matildas making it to the semi-finals of the World Cup with a green and gold mufti day.

This week is Book Week for schools across Australia. We will be holding a parade to celebrate this Friday 25 August. Keep an eye on SchoolStream for more information.

English

In English, students are learning to use their background knowledge and to find clues in a text to make an inference.

We are learning to:

  • infer when we read
  • read fluently

We know when we are successful when we:

  • use the clues in the text and what we already know to understand what we are reading.
  • read quickly and accurately, using correct expression.

Mathematics

We are learning to:

  • use objects, diagrams, images and actions to solve multiplication and division problems

We know when we are successful when we:

  • draw arrays to demonstrate situations involving multiplication or division
  • show multiplication or division processes using repeated addition or subtraction on a blank number line
  • determine all of the factors of a given multiple
  • deconstruct and identify a range of different equal groups within an array

Visual Arts

This term, students are engaging in an artist study, learning about the techniques and works of artists such as Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh and Australian artist, Bronwyn Bancroft.

We are learning to:

  • appreciate the work of artists and use their works as inspiration.

We know when we are successful when we:

  • understand that some artists use their own experiences for their inspiration
  • understand that artists do not always depict real things
  • think about the mood the artist is trying to create
  • think about the colour and composition of our artwork
