Improved Teacher Practice
Effective educational strategies that are sound in theory and delivery are perpetually refined to ensure that students benefit from improved teacher practice. In recent years, the Department of Education has emphasised a focus on Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to ensure that students receive the same instruction and feedback, regardless of who’s classroom they are in.
Scoresby Secondary College has been a Lead School in this area, supporting other secondary schools, as well as primary schools, as they look to improve their teacher practice and consistency of feedback. Such practices have led to significant growth in our students’ growth and abilities from Year 7 to Year 9, endorsed by NAPLAN results, particularly in 2023.
Feedback should be specific, continuous, timely and should guide the student in relation to how and where to improve. We tend to break feedback down into two key types; Summative, which is provided at the end of a unit such as exams, projects and the like, and Formative, feedback that is provided throughout the unit or task, guiding students as they work through the activities.
A key focus for Scoresby Secondary Teachers in 2023 has been feedback and moderation of student work to ensure that consistency of judgement occurs from teacher to teacher. An element of regular feedback has meant moving to continuous reporting so that parents and carers can see the feedback being provided to students throughout the semester, in addition to the feedback provided directly to the student within the classroom. Parents and carers have been notified of the feedback release dates and a Compass email will be received when feedback is available to be viewed by students, parents and carers.
Learning Conferences
An important element for student learning is the partnership between teachers, parents and carers to support students in their studies. An opportunity for students and their parents and carers to conference with their teachers is available on Wednesday 6 September. Parents and Carers will be able to make appointments via Compass from Monday 21 August and all are encouraged to do so. In the event that a parent experiences difficulty doing so on Compass, classroom teachers are also able to make books upon a request from home. A compass post including a how to guide is available on news feed.
Students will not be required to attend classes on this day with the exception of students participating in a VET course.
Students are expected to attend the Learning Conferences in full school uniform with their parent, guardian.

College Assembly
Last week we held our second whole school assembly for the term. What a marvellous celebration of our amazing students. From the beginning we were treated to a wonderful cultural experience with one of our two Performing Arts Captains, Susitina Von Heiderbrandt, performing a contemporary Tongan song. Together, with two of her very good friends, Iasinta Aiolupotea Faasoo and Anthony Calkin, they put forth a wonderful, entertaining musical item for the whole college.
Whole School assemblies, in collaboration with Mrs Major, are orchestrated by our Senior School Leaders. The planning and delivery of these assemblies continue to impress. I would also like to acknowledge the great work of Maya Faddoul in taking on the role of compare for our assemblies. Maya’s skill continues to advance with every assembly; well done Maya!
A big thank you to Jacob Compton and Imogen Brown who updated us all on some great sporting achievements to date, this term. This included the Foden girls competing in the State Hockey Championships in the recent holidays; with Bella being part of the Gold Medal winning team! Congratulations to both Emma and Bella Foden.
Other assembly highlights included a load of awards for various endeavours, including some Year 9 awards for outstanding NAPLAN results.
Property wise it has been really pleasing to see how many of our students take care of our facilities, doing the right thing inside and outside of the classroom, and treating our facilities with respect. Any issues are generally reported to me immediately, highlighting the pride that most students take in being part of the Scoresby Secondary College community.
This enables our school to spend less money on unnecessary maintenance, enabling more funds to be directed toward purchases that benefit our students.
