Book Week 2023 – Read, Grow, Inspire

This year, our celebration of Book Week was a resounding success, filled with exciting author visits, a fantastic costume parade that brilliantly combined our love for reading and science, a captivating production, engaging incursions, and targeted learning activities inspired by the books nominated by the Children's Book Council of Australia.

While our classrooms are always abuzz with enthusiastic readers and writers every day, this special week provides a unique opportunity for us to pause and truly cherish the incredible gift of literacy. The author visits throughout our Primary School not only added to our love of writing but also deepened our appreciation for the written word. Many authors graced us with their own stories, which further enriched our literary journey.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the parents and friends who joined us for the parade and continue to support us on this wonderful journey of reading and writing. Your presence and encouragement mean the world to us as we nurture the next generation of avid readers and skilled writers.

Group Sport

Throughout the latter half of this term, our Year 3, 4, 5, and 6 students have had the privilege of benefiting from the guidance of our Year 10 student coaches. During group sports activities, our students have enthusiastically taken part in a variety of sports, receiving focused skill coaching and engaging in the actual gameplay.

The experience of working across different age groups, with our senior students serving as admirable role models, not only fosters a caring and supportive community but also nurtures a profound sense of connection and unity within our school.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our senior school coaches and would like to acknowledge Mr Hillard, Mr Keirnan and Ms Langdon for their dedicated efforts in making this enriching experience possible. Our Primary students truly value this time, and it has been a wonderful opportunity for them to learn, grow, and connect with their peers in an amazingly supportive environment.

Year 5 Explore the Wonders of Space in IMAX

In the early hours of a frosty Wednesday morning, 30th August, Year 5 students set-off into outer space to witness the beauty of our planet at Melbourne Museum.

Linked directly to our Science unit of learning, where students are exploring the idea of colonising Mars in lieu of our own planet becoming inhospitable, our visit to the museum had students watch the IMAX film, ‘A Beautiful Planet’. This stunning film let students see the majesty of Earth from outer space; specifically, the International Space Station presently orbiting our planet.

In the film, astronauts working on the International Space Station shared their experiences of what it is like to work, life and sleep in space. They also shared amazing, never-to-be-believed views of our planet from orbit. This allowed students to see Earth from an entirely new and different perspective, helping them put into perspective the ever-changing, rapidly evolving nature of our planet.

Students also had the opportunity to visit various other exhibits, including a dinosaur and rock mineral exhibit, walk through the stunning forest gallery, and travel back in time in the Melbourne Story and Mini Museum exhibit.

Here is what students had to say about their experience about the film, and the museum more generally:

Zahli  - I think the museum visit we did was good, because it was fun to look at all the different kinds of extinct animals and facts about them, It was also pretty interesting to see so many different birds when we went outside into the forest gallery.

Tahira - I think the museum was a fun experience. The bus ride was fun. We got  to learn new things about animals and dinosaurs, which was interesting and fun.

Barnaby - I think the museum was a very fun experience and we got to learn about lots of different animals. But i think it was too short and we didn't have time for most of the things

Harlan - I think that the museum was a good experience. I liked seeing the mini museum. It was cool because it had a sovereign hill in it. It was also good because we got to see the IMAX. I thought that was really cool.
