Representing our school at District Athletics is a huge honour and all of our students that competed in the Southport District Athletics event last week should be very proud of themselves.

A huge congratulations goes to all our long, and middle distance runners: Bronte, Tess, Otto, Jayla, Imran, Sonny, and Lani, these events require courage to enter and great stamina and perseverance to complete. Bronte needs to be commended for his courageous efforts as he achieved a first in both the 1500m and 800m. Bronte now holds the Southport Record for the 800m distance in his age group by running it in 2:44.51. Last year Bronte came 3rd in the 1500m and this year a first and a PB. The moral of this story is ‘practice makes progress’.

The sprinters (Cedric, Ethan S, Ellie, Dalene, Gael, Abdul, Ginger and Joshua) showed a lot of power in the 100m and 200m dash. Ellie and Ethan achieved first place ribbons in the 100m and have also qualified for Division.

The Field events of high jump, triple jump, long jump, shot put and discus are very technical and require a lot of practice and years to master. Tex, Tavi, Will L, Alberta, Hieu, Harper, Flynn, Ellie, Rupert, Eamon, Ethan S, Sonny, Tess, Mia H, Imran and Otto all braved these events, they didn’t get a place but it wasn’t about that. These students showed something greater than a ribbon and that was courage, strength, resilience and great sportspersonship.

Another example of Practice makes Progress is our Ginger she managed to hurl the discus over 15m and has progressed to division.

Our hurdlers Lani, Joshua, Jayla and Gael had only trained on lower hurdles. They overcame the much higher hurdles while racing with ease.

Our Relay teams got around each other and formed a great bond. A huge thank you to Otto and Lani for stepping up and racing in a group higher than their age.

Team: Rupert, Bronte, Abdul and Will L got a first and a qualification for Division.

Team: Ethan, Imran, Eamon and Joshua achieved 3rd place.

A special mention must go to the show of a growth mindset when Joshua tripped and fell at the end of his hurdles race. He got back up, brushed it off and focused on his next race which was the 200m and achieved an easy first place!

Win or not everyone played as a team and supported one another, whether it was cheering on from the sidelines or a hand on the back of a friend who felt down, they were there for one another.

Thank you to Ms X and Ms Dillion, Bradi (Ginger's mum), Francine (Ellie’s mum), Adriana (Alberta’s mum), Korina (Tess’ mum) and Nathaniel for giving up their day to support this event. It wouldn’t have gone ahead without your support and to all the parents who came to cheer us on!
