INSPIRING CURIOUS MINDS

YEAR 3/4 NEWS

3/4 students this term in Curiosity have been learning about the unit: ‘How did early exploration impact Indigenous people and our nation?'. Students explored what life was life prior to and post colonisation in Australia. Across the unit students learnt about sustainable practices of First Nations Peoples, customs and traditions, the First Fleet arriving and how the lanscape of Australia changed over time. Students got involved in various hands-on activities that saw them making Hard Tak biscuits, damper, pretending to be a passenger on a First Fleet ship and weaving with Lomandra leaves. At the completion of this unit students needed to work with a partner to create a diorama of the landscape of Australia prior to and post colonisation. Students planned out their diorama before bringing their landscapes to life with various materials. We had our launch on Monday afternoon, and it was so wonderful to have the students sharing their knowledge and creation with all the family and friends that joined us.

ANDY AND THE STOLEN BOOK _FINAL

PREP AND GRADE 2 STORY TIME

This term Grade 2’s have been exploring the question, ‘How has our community changed over time?’ They have inquired into the way communities manage their environment and use technology to help and improve where they live. The Grade 2 students also explored how storytelling allows communities to share information and values. They connected their learning in curiosity with reading and writing, as they read indigenous stories, fables and modern stories. They were able to identify the lesson and explain how that lesson helped communities. For their final project the Grade 2 students chose a lesson they thought was important for our community and wrote a story for the preps with this lesson. Some of the lessons included, ‘if you’re lost ask for help,’ ‘listen to your elders’, ‘use a quiet inside voice’ and ‘be nice to your friends.’ The aim is to help inspire the students of the South Melbourne Park Primary School and make our community a better place. To celebrate the end of their learning the Grade 2 classes buddied up with a Prep class and shared their stories.

AUTHOR VISIT

We were very fortunate this week to have the amazing author, Felice Arena visit South Melbourne Park Primary School. He is one of Australia’s much-loved children’s authors. Felice hosted the session with enthusiasm, humour and displayed his talents for telling a story. He also conducted a tutoring on how to draw the cat from his new book PASTA! It was an extremely engaging from start to finish. We extend our appreciate to Felice and the Pandolfini family.
