Year Three
Dear Year Three Families,
It has been such an adventurous term already with the Aboriginal Art Incursion, science experiments and Book Week…. and there is still so much more to come!
Reading:
In Reading, students have been continuing to investigate Reciprocal Reading strategies, in particular, the role of the ‘summariser’. The Year Three’s have practised using strategies such as the ‘Five Finger Retell’ and ‘Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then’, to ensure their thoughts are detailed and concise. To celebrate Saltwater’s P-9 Book Week, each class created their own text innovation. Students chose a published book and redesigned it in their own ways. Each student created a page of written text and accompanied it with illustrations. This class book is going to be laminated and bound by our wonderful parent volunteers and teachers at school! The Year Three’s will then be able to access and read their published book in their classroom libraries.
Writing:
In Writing, students are continuing to explore Procedural Texts. The Year Three’s began the week with a language experience, in which they participated in an activity before writing about it. During the experience, students practised note-taking and wrote down the important things they will need to remember in order to write their procedural text. It is fantastic to see them confidently follow the structure of procedural texts and work towards refining their writing using different sentence types, adjectives and verbs.
Maths:
In Maths, the Year Three’s have been learning about Measurement. They practised solving real world problems using their knowledge of:
- The requirements for measuring the length of an object accurately.
- Comparing Informal and Formal Units of Measurement.
- Converting measurements between different Metric Units.
- Addition and Length to calculate Perimeter.
We have now completed our unit on Measurement and students have done a tremendous job by continuing to show a growth mindset during our Launch, Explore, Discuss lessons.
Inquiry:
In Inquiry, we have continued investigating our unit under the Central Idea, 'Many cultures express themselves through different art mediums, encouraging interconnectedness in our global community.'
Students explored our third Line of Inquiry, by learning the importance of cultural appreciation. The Year Three’s inquired into the connection of different cultures to promote diversity. They did this by thinking about our own country and how Indigenous Australians united by creating a ‘War Cry Dance’, to show the unification of all Australian peoples. The students were able to understand the different perspectives of their peers through artefact presentations and our Cultural Dress Day.
