Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,

Even though the end of Term 3 is quickly approaching, there is still lots of learning we have done! In particular, this week, we had Book Week, which was a huge success for the Year Two’s and the whole school.

Reading

Last week, students worked on the reading skill of critiquing. Students analysed the books they read and judged the authors' language, message and purpose of the book, both in terms of fiction and non-fiction texts. This week, we had Book Week. For reading, students read and delved into the language of the text, making sure they understood which conventions they used and why.

 Writing

Last week, students completed a pre-test for their next unit which will be Narratives. Students also started their new unit on Poetry. Students were exposed to acrostic poems and haiku poems this week, using descriptive adjectives and adverbs to paint a written picture about their topics. As mentioned, this week, students completed a class novel based on a book they engaged with throughout the year. Each student had their own page and made it their own through specific language features and illustrations.

Maths

Last week, students were introduced to their new topic on Measurement, more specifically, Mass and Capacity. Students learnt about these terms in practical ways and learnt how to decipher between the two. This week, students continued learning about Measurement but related more to Volume. Students compared items and determined which one had more volume using tactical skills and written reasoning.

Inquiry

Last week, students continued their understandings on our current topic ‘Toys and games change over time’. More specifically, how resources can influence certain toys and games. Students made connections to their favourite toys and games and delved into why certain resources were used to make it. This week, students completed the unit, finishing up with creating a toy or game for their classmates to play with.

Book Week

Book Week has been an absolute blast! In particular, students loved the Book Week Parade where they dressed up as their favourite book character and strutted their stuff down the runway in front of the Year Two cohort at the basketball courts. Have a look at some images below from this enjoyable celebration!

Attendance

Attendance is paramount for each students learning. For an individual student they are missing out on learning, cementing friendships and events that maybe occurring. Their absence also impacts their classmates as they are unable to learn from them or with them and the teacher is able to support them more with their learning areas.
